Been looking for an ac/dc lincoln buzz box or thunderbolt for a little while on CL. I've seen them for anywhere from 300 up to 400. Is this a good price or to much? Thanks Steve
Reply:$200 is more like it.   Look for an off-brand name like Century or Sears.  On my local CL I see a Forney for $125, and a Hobart mega-arc for $250.  I don't think that the Forney is DC, unsure about the Hobart.  An hour away I see a new-looking Century AC/DC with leads and helmet for $245, and a never used Miller Thunderbolt AC for $300.   Of the units shown, I would probably grab the Century, or save money with the Forney. If it does not come with leads, it is of course worth less.Be patient.   You can always email them and ask if they would take less, especially if it has been on CL for a while.Richard Originally Posted by Basicwelder54Been looking for an ac/dc lincoln buzz box or thunderbolt for a little while on CL. Reply:It all depends on your location.  My rule of thumb is the AC only buzz boxes are $50 - $150 and the AC/DC are $150 - $250.  Depends on condition, leads and extras, of course.  Got a fine older Miller Dialarc 250 with decent short leads for $300. awhile back, so shop wisely."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:I'm a Lincoln guy to the bone but I wouldn't buy their smaller buzzboxes because of the tapped settings I prefer machines that are variable amperage like the Thunderbolt. Yes I contradicted myself a lot their but in the case of buzzboxes their really isn't much that can be torn up on them unless your trying to destroy it.Lincoln pro core 125 14''chop saw7 inch grinder,2-4.5 inch grinders, electric die grinder.Half inch drillAnd alot of hand tools
Reply:I just tried to offer someone on craigslist 200 for a lincoln ac/dc buzz box and he turned me down, he wants 275.00 with no extras. I guess I will wait it out,I like lincoln a lot too but I like the idea of having the infinite amperage control. Thanks for the quick replies. I'm in southern NY,Steve

Reply:I just bought a miller thunderbolt ac/dc in great shape with leads for $200 on CL
Reply:If I could buy a AC buzzbox over an AC/DC buzzbox, is the DC process that much better than AC? I'm just wondering is it worth it? I've heard that DC has a smoother arc. I don't know, what do you guys think.

Reply:Thanks for the input, I will wait it out and see what comes up on CL or maybe I will keep saving and buy new.
Reply:Just saw a century AC/DC arc welder for 385.00 no extras on CL.Who makes century and what would you offer?

Reply:I paid $200 for this AC/DC unit last summer. The seller wanted $250 but agreed to take $200 on the phone so I went and picked it up.  It's about ten years old but it's in really nice condition. Lincoln literally made millions of them. They are a great value but it's nicer to get an older one. I looked at a new one at Lowes a while back and I noticed that the on-off switch was smaller than the one I have. I don't know what other changes they made recently. You can do some really nice welding with them too. I like a regular arc welder because they are so economical. I got this mainly so that I don't have to change my Syncrowave 200 back and forth to stick weld. Prices are usually from $75 for a junker to $400 for near new on CL. Reply:I'm in Orange County ny, I saw that machine and am concerned about the amperage needed. The machine is for my garage. What size electric service do I need for that I have a 240v 50amp now. SteveLast edited by Basicwelder54; 01-28-2014 at 09:49 AM.
Reply:you can run an IA off a 50.  I did it up to 200 amps without a problem.  Youre gonna mostly run at 125-150 which is no problem.  1/8" 7018 runs at 115-140ish, so the small buzzbox is a bit limited on DC.If you have the room, grab it.  It welds really smooooooth.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I would sell you mine but im in oklahoma. I wounder if the have a flat rate box for that?? you ain't gotta eat itCheck local Auctions also.I've noticed Welders sell cheaper there because only 1 or 2 guys show up to buy it.Its not like CL where you have mass interest.
Reply:We bought 4 Airco 250 amp AC-DC Bumble Bee a few years ago at a sale. They were about 100.00 each.  I let my friends have the extras.  It was one of those deals were we were in the right place at the right time.  The paint looked like crap, scratched ,very dirty but we are still using one of them.   They were singe phase machines and very heavy. They look just like the Miller AC_DC 250 amp dialarc machines. We are in Alabama.  I will watch around here but freight may be the deal killer.
Reply:Check ebay. I bought a used Dayton 240/140 (or something like that) AC/DC machine for $100 shipped. Reply:I'm sorry to bring this thread up but, I have seen a few miller thunderbolt XL AC/DC welders come up on craigslist and they are asking 500.00-550.00 for them. How much are they really worth? I was thinking of offering like 300 or 350? What's your thoughts? Thanks Steve
Reply:$300 to 350 sounds about fair for an AC/DC machine like that. I've seen some lower and plenty higher. However on the high side, you can easily find nicer industrial units like old Idealarcs and Dialarcs in the $400 to $450 range. They would run rings around a small unit like a T bolt. I semi regularly see those bigger industrial machines down as low as $300-350, as for what ever reason people don't seem to think they are worth as much as the smaller homeowner units..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:There was a new looking thunderbolt xl on CL where I am and it stayed on CL for months. Guy wanted $500 for it.The newer ones put out something like 220 to 230 amps AC and 160 amps DC, which will do just about anything you cold ever want.Yeah offer 350 to 400 for it. Reply:Take a road trip to Philly.  This AIRCO (Miller Dialarc) 250 has been listed for a long time for $210.  You could probably get it for $150.http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/tls/4488157989.html"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Looking forward to trying DC +/- 7018 and 6010.
Reply:Well, I decided to get the miller thunderbolt XL, i liked the lincoln AC/DC buzz box but i wasn't crazy about the tapped settings and the low end DC settings. So I decided to buy this it was a little more expensive at 375.00 but, that's probably the best I can do around here. Not a spectacular deal but, I'm happy with it. I got him down from 400.00. Bring on some 6010,thanks for all the help guysPs. First order of business is changing the work clamp and stinger Attached Images

Reply:I think DC is way better. I started life with an AC-225 and then went to the Hobart Stickmate LX AC/DC. The arc strikes were easier for me, and the arc was much smother. Is it the DC or was the 40 year old AC-225 in need of repair? I don't know. But I much prefer the DC. Also with an AC/DC unit you can run scratch start TIG for not a lot of money. I love that as well. I am pretty much TIG welding every night now after work, just to teach myself. Not counting the argon bottle my TIG investment was less than $100. Regarding the price, I look at Craig's List almost every day. In the NY, NJ, CT area, there are not a lot of AC/DC buzz boxes coming up for sale, and when they do, 99% of them are more than $400. Old dialarcs are routinely listed for $900-$1,500. Its crazy around here. Everything on CL is overpriced. But compared to buying in the store, $400 for an AC/DC stickmate or thunderbolt with infinite control may be worth it. The cheapest you will find one of those new is $550Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:no i didn't buy the lincoln AC/DC buzz box, it just happened to be they both were available at the same time. Crazy how that worked out. but i still have a Lincoln AC buzz box, so two stingers and running beads everywhere sounds like fun. if i feel really adventurous fire up the tig and mig welder and go to town.
Reply:Louie1961, i contacted the guy you mentioned the other day in east haven,Ct and got that thunderbolt for 375. thanks for the lead.steve
Reply:Yeah with the buzz boxes 125 amp DC you would have been pretty limited with waht you can do DC. 125 amps means you are stuck running 1/8 rod most near the low end.The thunderbolt xl and its 160 amps DC you can run most 5/32 rods.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
