Hi Guys-Just bought a spool gun when I replaced my MIG machine. I bought a Lincoln 140C mig machine and the 100SG spool gun. I am not having luck getting anything like a good arc or weld. I tried everything I can find on the web and in the manual and even switched the argon bottle out in case the gas was contaminated. The attached picture shows what I am achieving (or not ). I am a proficient MIG welder though with no formal education in welding and only weld for fun and projects for friends and family. Any ideas what I am doing wrong, not doing, etc? I've checked gas flow rate. I had a piece of 6061 t4 laying around which is the plate in the picture. The wire is 4043 that came with the gun. I am using a push technique at 10 degrees off vertical. The plate is about 14g. Help!

Reply:Forgot the picture and in the meantime, went by my LWS and found out my new MIG machine came set up for flux core so the polarity (cable mounts) were wrong. Wow, do I feel stupid. It's been 14 years since I bought a new machine and just went at it w/o checking that. In my defense, nowhere in the manual for either the spool gun or the 140c do they say change the polarity. I'm showing my non-educated welder side. Oops! Just glad problem is solved!
Reply:Even without the pict I can make a few guesses. 14 ga will be pushing the max if not beyond on a small mig like that with alum. You didn't list your settings, but they'd better be pretty much maxed out to have any chance this will work. 1/8"- 11 ga will max out a 180 amp 230v mig. If your settings are anything less than max, that's probably your 1st problem. 14 ga may even be beyond the capability of your machine dependng on exact circumstances. If you have any loss of power, 16 ga might be the max you can do.Edit: I see you posted while I was typing. Glad you noticed the polarity was wrong. I hope that solves your issues..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
