Hi guys. It's been a while since I've had time to post anything. I've kind of sorta been keeping up with some of the interesting looking posts but that's about all I've had time to do. It started when my best helper quit again leaving me with two young guys who needed supervising 100% of the time. Then I got hit with the farming season pretty heavy and had the oil field hit me at the same time. Got to hopping pretty good around here for a while. It did make up for the rather low income summer. Then just about the time I was getting caught up again I had my annual round of bad luck. It must of been building up for a while because it was a whopper. What happened was on Nov 8 my house burned down. I mean really burned down. Here's some rather lousy phone pics taken by one of my helpers. That's me the day after trying to get some of the hot spots out. Turned out to not be possible and it flared back up later that day. Reply:The next day I finished fixing a backhoe that was in the shop and used it to push the house into a pile. Since it turned out to be so impossible to put it out I decided that if I could pile it up it wouldn't hurt to let it burn (less to haul off). Here's some pics from my phone after pushing it into a pile. It just took 9 loads in my trailer to haul it all to the dump. I was lucky when a friend loaned me his tracked skid steer with a grubbing bucket and grapple. It made the job a lot easier. Reply:And finally we get to today. I've been fighting pretty hard for the last month to get my life back in order. I lost nearly everything in the fire. I did manage to salvage the data off my computer and a few other things but not a lot else. Anyway I managed to get some dirt hauled in and build up a place to put a trailer. I've gotten it in place but I still want to haul a lot more dirt in the get rid of the low spot. As you can see from the first pic there's a pretty big change in the looks of my place (for comparison you can look at my web site below to see what it was like before). The next two shots are of the quick set of steps we literally threw together today. A grand total of 4 1/2 hours some new and some old metal and here you have it. I did have an advantage in the angle iron notcher and bender seen in the 4th pic. The last pic shows a corner done with them. With snow due in tomorrow I thought it might be a good idea to have a better set of steps so that some body didn't break there neck on the skimpy trailer steps (my wife broke here arm 12-14 years ago getting out of a 5th wheel like this while camping without the snow). Reply:Sounds like you have an amazing attitude in light of a devastating event. The best time for a home to burn down (if there is such a time) is when it's unoccupied. Good thing it didn't happen at night while you were sound asleep. Life events like this show you who your real friends are. Sounds like you have some good ones.
Reply:That's awful. I'm terribly sorry for the loss of your home. I hope everything works out for you. Thanks for showing the pictures though. I appreciate your willingness to share.

Reply:That sucks big time. I'm not sure how I'd handle that, but I seriously doubt I could take it as well as you are doing. I can understand the no water pressure issue. Burned up a friends truck this summer moving it at his place. Carb backfired and they had no pressure from the well to make any difference with the hose. The truck with the extingusher had left earlier, and I'd just pulled the one out of my truck that day when stripping it of tools to get work done on it.Nice job on the steps. My thoughts and prayers are with you..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Sounds like life has thrown you a curve or two lately. I admire your ability to deal with it as well as you have and still are. Reply:Geez, Irish, real sorry to hear that! Your attitude is an inspiration. The worst is losing the personal stuff. On the bright side, like others have said, you're still here and no one was killed, and you still have your shop to keep you going. In the long run I guess you've saved a bit on demo'ing the house to build the new one. This was supposed to happen for a reason. You may see it down the road a piece or it may not dawn on you, but there will be some reason. Reply:Hey irish,Really sorry to read about your loss. I know how devastating a home fire can be as I also had a home fire back in '75. Fortunately, my ex & son & daughter got out thanks to my neighbor. I lost most everything inside my home & luckily was able to rebuild. A fire is something most don't take into consideration until it happens. I was blessed to have absolutely marvelous neighbors who helped me & a customer who let me stay in a house he owned that was unoccupied at the time only (3) blocks away. It took about 6 months & my pap's help, & we rebuilt. Yes.... these are the times you really know who your true friends are.....I hope you get back to normalcy asap & let know what you may need to help you.
