Man I keep gougeing the metal. What techniques do I use to get a flat finish?
Reply:dont tip the grinder keep it as flat as you canChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:Maybe work your way down to something less coarse as you get closer to the base metal?  I usually start with a rough grit on my grinder like 24 or 36 then as i get the weld most of the way flat i jump it up to like 60 or 80.  Less if i want it really smooth.
Reply:Presuming that you are using an ange grinder.....Keep the machine moving, with a light pressure. Too much pressure won't cut faster, just make controll tougher, and keeping the machine in one spot will overhaet the material and lead to excessive wear on the wheel, as well as gougingUse the proper wheel. Especially on softer materials, the wrong wheel type will dig. There is a balance between grit size, bond strength, and abrazive type. Keep the wheel fairly flat to the surface unless you must tilt up. About 10 degrees is optimalBreak the wheel in on scrap to get rid of the sharp corner at the edge. The corner will dig. You rarely need the corner. If you do, use a fresh wheel or put it back on by rinding scrap to profile the edgeFor a top finish, use tiger (fap disk) wheeels rather than hard wheels. They won't remove as much metal, and give a great finish. DO NOT use them for heavy grinding, as they won't last
Reply:use a 60 grit flap disk and keep your grinder at about 15 degrease
Reply:analogy time:Imagine somebody gives you a bobcat and you go out to level out your hard.  Do you lower the bucket and take an inch off from one end to the other?  No, cause that would just lower the entire terrain and keep it the same contour.  Do you go to the low spots and dig there?  No, cause you would then make the hills even more severe. What you would want to do is take dirt from the high spots and move them to the low spots.  now, with metal, you can't take metal from the high spots and move it...so you just stay on the high spots as long as you can and bring them down to the lows.  You don't go directly for the low spots and grind them deeper.I find that this analogy works well, as I have to train guys at work to do this...guys that grind and do metal finishing all day.
