im looking to buy a bigger drill press. are the magnetic ones with the electric drills worth looking at?
Reply:Magnetic drill presses, or mag drills, are great tools, but they do not replace a regular bench or floor model drill press.A mag drill is for taking the drill press to the work- it will hold itself down with its magnets on a truck frame, or a building I beam, or a gate frame. But they usually only will drill relatively small holes, up to 2" or so is normal, with carbide hole saws, and they usually only have a couple of inches of quill movement- so you can drill a hole in 2" thick square tubing, but not 6".If you want a bigger drill press for the shop, a mag drill is not what you want. Plus, they aint cheap- a decent one can easily run a grand for a small one, up to 1500 for a bigger one, like a milwaukee or a jancy.
