so I haven't done much welding since high school but i want to get back at it, and i need to get on par for structural welding at any angle...EDIT: I have truck projects tat require frame welding, crossmember construction, scab plates etc, hence my goal. I have an OLD Lincoln AC stick welder, this is the first time I have even touched it in seven years.1/4 mild plate, 1/8 in 6013 sticks, @100 ampsthese where the first three and a half beads The welder i'm using in an old i mean old lincon but it was also $50, heck the hood cost me moreThanks all.RichLast edited by 20ozjolt; 09-06-2012 at 08:13 PM.
Reply:The beads look cold to me. My chart shows 100 amps AC at the bottom of the recommended settings for 1/8" 6013. ( 100-150 amps suggested range). I'd push the amps up to at least 125-130 myself..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Hmm. A metal knob! I've not seen one of those Lincoln 180s before.
Reply:after i got off work last night i tried running it at 130, could definitely feel how much deeper it penetrated...but I`m still having a high crown, is this an issue?  or a sign that in moving to slowly?i hit a metal shop today and picked up a pile o scrap so ill have some for things to critique later.
Reply:try a different rod angle and see if it helps . there are a lot of factors , heat ,travel speed, rod angle . If that don't help maybe try to weave just a little from side to side to spread that bead out a little. Remember to watch your puddle not the slag. your puddle will let you know what your bead will look like under the slag.  What brand of rods do yo have laying around. ? just wondering because if you are using some cheep hobart rods you get a TS you might want to start with a better rod. some of the hobart rods are had to see your puddle with and can make it a bit tuff to learn on. (just my .02) keep up the practice you will get it with time .
Reply:Beads on flat plate often have a slightly higher crown than beads run on joints. Increasing your speed slightly may help some. You want to watch the ripples to see if you are moving too fast. A definite V to the beads is a good indicator you need to slow back down. In your last weld pict, the 2nd bead down from the top shows signs of that V in the ripples that would tell me you might need to slow down. That bead also looks like it's heavier on the lower side than the upper side. Not sure if you welded that in the horizontal position and the beads "slumped" from gravity,  if your rod angle was way off, or if you were doing something else like an odd oscillation pattern. 6013 will also usually tell you if your settings and travel speed is correct. If the slag just curls up or flakes off with little or no effort, that's usually a good sign. If you have to do a lot of beating, then that usually says you were off some where. 6-8" of weld is fairly typical for a full rod. If you are getting way more, then chances are you need to slow down. If you are getting way less, then you probably need to speed up. Flat stringers will usually be closer to 8" of weld, while fillets or bevel joints would tend towards the 6" length due to the extra area that needs to be filled.Post up picts of your practice and we can go on from there. Overall the beads don't look all that bad. A bit of tweaking and they'll improve..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Thanks for the feed back, its going to take some time before ill trust my life to my welds....The 6011 i have is harbor freightThe 6013 is i think hobart, i can check later but i did purchase it at a welding shop on the recommendation of the clerk.Im reading the manuals online now and watching youtube that should also help a bit.Last edited by 20ozjolt; 09-08-2012 at 12:47 AM.
Reply:Buy Lincoln at Home Depot or Lows much better quality and price too . Try E-7014 if they have it .
Reply:I like that old welder they don't make them like that anymore. If you look inside you will see it's all copper windings and in my eyes that's better than aluminum. I have that same welder and i have run mine way over the duty cycle and that old welder just keeps on going. The first thing I would do is put new leads and power cord on your welder. If the leads on an AC welder aren't in tip top shape resistance will build up and the stinger will start to get hot after  a half dozen rods. From your pics it looks like you need to bump up the amps to get better looking welds. If that doesn't do the trick you are getting to much resistance in the leads to melt the rods. I bought my welder for $15.00 at a garage sale minus the leads and power cord. Some idiot thought they could get a bunch of money for the copper and cut them off. It cost me over $100 to replace the leads and power cord but I'm glad I did because it's one of the best stick welders I have ever used. I burned my first rod in 1979 so I've used more than a few welders and my old welder has one of the smoothest arcs I have ever seen. Just my two cents. good luck and have fun.If you look at the code number the fifth and sixth numbers is what year it was manufactured. My welder was made in 1960 and I think Lincoln still make some parts for it.Last edited by kctgb; 09-09-2012 at 09:24 PM.
Reply:the leads were replaced by the previous owner and i put a new power cord on it.... I`m not having any heat build up so i assume its all GTG
Reply:L - arc LengthA - electrode AngleC - CurrentE - ElectrodeS - travel Speedget these things right and with a little practice, youll be making welds you CAN trust. I agree with DSW... A little cold. Get yourself some soapstone and make a couple of parallel lines, about 3/8"s of an inch or so apart. (make a couple narrower, and a couple wider too) then practice weaving from edge to edge, or circles, or J's, or however you decide to try it, then look at the results. One thing that I had a problem with when I was welding is travel speed... I was always going too fast. Go about 2 times as slow as you think you need to and you should be just about right  Weldingtipsandtricks.com too...
