Just thought Id post a picture of this seen many of them but never used one. A friend stopped by today and let me try it out. Whats your opinions? I can see where a person is doing a long in length run to help with fatigue, it may be handy. In short or confined welds not so much or at all. It was hard for me to get the hang of it idk maybe just me been doing it the other way to long I guess? Attached Images

Reply:I bought one of those a while ago (Praxair called it a "TIG pen"), it does take some getting used to. I'm not that crazy about it, but maybe I just need to use it more. First I tried using a whole stick of filler, then I started cutting them in half like I usually do and it felt a bit better. I still think it's a lot like a condom: Yes they're a good idea, but not using 'em feels so much better...
Reply:powerIn machine tool world, this is a pin-vise. Depending upon their precision, theyusually will accommodate a range of sizes; essentially they are a miniaturehand-held three jaw chuck. Your tool appears to have a lot more going on. Is it just another variety of pin vise, or is it specifically designed for welding world ? Q - One, is the little wheel on the right side of the business district part of the cinch,or is it a roller advance ?Q - Two, is this tool dedicated to one size of rod ? How does it work, I may want one, several, or none, please post more particulars. Opus
Reply:It's not a pin vise, there are no jaws, instead the filler is suspended between two rollers.http://products.esab.com/Templates/T041.asp?id=93098

Reply:If that little pen was powered and just had a button to push to feed the filler I would use it especially for heavier metals.
Reply:These contraptions are neat and all, but a tool really is not needed. A little practice goes a long way here. Tig weld enough and you should be able to feed 3 feet of wire into a weld, grab another piece and repeat, without stopping. Reply:Hi, an extension to this device would have to be something like a mini spool gun, but with plain mig wire wound on the spool and powered...Yeah.....no long lengths of wire to poke in your ear.Ian..
Reply:Its a manual wire feeder, they have been around a long time and use a thumb wheel to feed the rod into the puddle. Not many people use them.

Reply:Here's another pic of the cheater. It's made from MIG or TIG wire that was laying around. It was inspired by one that was bent out of something like steel brake or hydraulic tubing. My son was doing tip buildups on Inconel turbine blades, day after day, all day long for months. Little narrow beads stacked one on top of another using fine filler. This helped.
