I found a post on CL with what looks to be an older AC/DC 225/125 advertised with a TIG torch. I recognize this is not going to give the same performance as a top of the line TIG outfit, but would it work well enough to play around with learning TIG? For ~$400 should I pursue it or pass?
Reply:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...-Welder-People...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:It can scratch start tig dc, needs a hf module for ac tig.Could be a good way to learn tig. Sometimes all those fancy settings get you in trouble.
Reply:$400 is too much if it doesn't come with EVERYTHING. Yes you can TIG with it, but the Tombstone makes it a little more difficult because you don't have infinite amp control. I use my Hobart Stickmate to TIG with. Any constant current DC power source can be used for sratch start TIG welding. It is fun as heck. You need to get a torch with a gas valve, and Argon bottle, and regulator, if it doesn't already come with that stuff. You can can get an Argon torch and regulator for <$100. The bottle might be a bit more depending on your area. Those welders are routinely listed on CL for $150-250.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:Zap - thanks for the link. I didn't see that searching the forums.Louie1961 - $400 is his asking price and of course I'll offer less. He also listed it with a small welding table (looks about 24" square) and the torch. I have a C25 bottle on my Miller 180 so I'm looking at this as an opportunity to play with TIG more than get started. Thanks for the tips everyone!

Reply:I've come across tombstones for as low as $25. (Was beyond broke at the time or I'd have it)400 is stupid expensive. I'd offer no more than 75-100.
Reply:$400 is on the high side of fair around here for an AC/Dc unit. $75-100 is usually the price on AC only ones. The tig parts add value, but as Louie mentioned a stepped unit like this is more difficult to work with than other units that are infinitely adjustable. If you are looking for a tig unit, I semi regularly see older dedicated tig machines like Miller 330's down as low as $400, some times less. It seems that bigger industrial units often go a lot cheaper than "homeowner" grade machines, though there are some down sides. Most industrial units are large, heavy, and usually want a minimum of 60 amps if not 10 amps of 220v power, though some will run at lower output on 50 amps..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:$400 is way to high. That may be geographic, but it's too high for me.I sold my ACDC without a scratch on it and way cleaner and newer for $300 2 years ago. For $400, he's nearing some quality inverters for DC welding, like the ESAB 161. Maybe even a Miller Maxstar S150 used. Having the AC portion of the machine isn't so great. You'd need a High Frequency box to even try AC aluminum tig welding and even then, it's nearly impossible to use effectively. You won't have any remote amperage control which makes welding aluminum pretty tough. I'd give $250.

I haven't seen an AC/DC one for under $100 in the past 6 or more years. Waiting for another 6 years for one under $100, isn't going to cut it either. Heck, even $200 on CL is a frickn pipe dream. .....Show me the link, then show me that it's NOT a "rust bucket" either. DanT, offer $300 and take it if the seller accepts your offer. I'm assuming it's in at least "good" condition? "Poor" condition is never an option because I don't succumb to buying used "neglected" crap.

Reply:Originally Posted by SuperArcDoc, DanT lives in Nebraska. Are you gonna cover his shipping cost from NY??? Old, Greensboro, NC and Richmond, VA are pretty far from Nebraska. Are you also offering to pay for shipping?Come on guys! Here's the thing I guess I should have added. The chances of finding the "perfect" AC/DC miller or Lincoln (what I originally mentioned) for under $300 is slim, especially when one adds the odds of finding it in his/her home town, to avoid outrageou$ shipping costs. That's like winning the lottery if you find the welder close by and shipping costs are not part of the total price. So, try finding one in DanT's neck of the woods, please. Murphy's law says the chances right now while he's looking for one, he won't find one. Behold, all you guys found some "under" $300, but you failed to mention that because they're NOT located within his state (nor mine for that matter), shipping will be cost prohibitive! One might as well buy a brand new one with a factory warranty for the total price! So, where's the welder you're all trying to show me for "UNDER $300?" ??? I rest my case fellas. Ps. Oldendum, a "Century" isn't a "miller or Lincoln" as I originally mentioned. Again, find a miller or Lincoln under $300 with both AC/DC and NOT a POS either. Good luck. Go ahead, I'm still waiting to see what y'all find. Shipping charges are included in the price if you're going to find welders all the way across state lines. Reality is reality.
