Aluminum BBQ Grill?

Hey guys!So, I've got a quick... And probably dumb question for y'all... I'm thinking of building of gas grill in the very near future..Any reason not to make it from aluminum? I've seen grills with a cast aluminum upper half, but I've never seen anyone weld an entire grill from flat plate... But I'd be willing to bet someone's done it...Just weighting my options here. Reply:There is probably a very valid reason they don't sell aluminum grill grates.......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I once made a set of burner covers for a gas cook pit. They held if for years until I gave the grill away. If making the whole grill from aluminum, consider the heat dissipation and radiant temps around the grill as aluminum leaches heat like crazy. Kinda like a big radiator.  Can't say for sure though, I've never built one but would be interested to see how it dose!Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!
Reply:Something else to consider is that it will take more fuel to maintain the same temperature of a steel grill.  I saw a smoker built from aluminum and they had a very difficult time keeping the temperature up without a roaring fire.  Aluminum just dissipates the heat too fast.Looks like me and Dan were talking about the same thing at the same time.Last edited by Gravel; 07-18-2014 at 04:25 PM.Reason: Added comment.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:A company was making trailer mounted aluminum "cookers" for a while sometime (fairly close to where I live I think).  Professional looking jobs and were trying to mass market them.  It took a long time to get hot just for hot dogs and hamburgers.  It had a little box for wood chips off to the side and somehow the burners were offset with a water box too to allow it to "steam".  You could not turn it up to high or you'd start getting distortion and they said the water box always had to be full or it would warp.  I was helping out with it, and I would never want to cook again.  I remember they prided themselves that it wouldn't "char" the food.  It'd barely get it out of the raw state before you had a line of hungry people mad at you too.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:I have wondered if hexavalent chromium could be a problem especially in a fire box when/if it gets too hot on the stainless.
