I have a question. You hear everyone use 6010 and 6011 interchangeably. 6011 is generally described as "just like 6010 but will work on AC as well." Well my question is, if they are that closely related, why do they even make a 6010? If a 6011 will run AC and DC, then what is the point of 6010? There must be some advantage to the 6010, but I can't find out what it is. I have even heard some pros say that 6011 runs better than 6010 on DC. Which should I purchase? By the way, I'm running DC only. I will primarily use it for heavy duty stuff on a root pass to be capped with 7018.
Reply:ok, i'll bite. hardly anyone (read no one ever in the history of arc welding) uses 6011 when they have a choice and have dc welding current except if you got an inverter that does not like the taste of 6010.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:^ +2Waaaaaay back when I had a job that involved welding, as low man on the totem pole, I usually got the Roughneck (AC) machine.  6011.  On times when I got the Blue Star (DC) I'd run 6010.  Got my own AEAD 200LE and then back to 6010.   Never run 6011 again until now with my Thunderbolt, but then only because that's what Fleet Farm had on sale.  It's crap Hobart stuff.  Doesn't run worth a FF.  Now, trying to relocate and then back to 6010 or whatever............Tim
Reply:My boss pays me to burn boxes and boxes of 6011.  I never got a straight answer why... so I figured Inweld 6011 was the cheapest rod on the planet !
Reply:Different but but not unrelated topic, why is the 5p 6010 red and 6011 white or Brown.

Reply:If you notice on the 6010 "grey" ones they have 5p+ stamped on the rods the other do not something to do with cleaner vs dirtier metals. And if I'm not mis the 5p rods were the first rods developed for pipelining back in the day also known as hippie rods or hyp for short~1987 Lincoln Sa-200~~1978 Miller Big 40~ (restored) ~and everything inbetween~

Reply:A couple years ago I was running a 24" 3/8" wall irrigation line, LWS ran out of 3/16" 5P. In desperation I grabbed 100lbs of 3/16" 6011C, the white stuff. Amazingly the guys liked it. It seemed to wet out a bit better and some thought it even stacked better than 5P on the cover. We were still running a 5/32" 5P root. Anything to get the job done.

Capping with 7018 was a pipeline procedure used for its LoHy properties on buried pipeline. 6010 is plenty ductile and plenty strong.
Reply:I have used both over the years... lately it is 1/8" 6011 what ever is cheapest at the moment... It stacks real pretty going vert up on 3/16 thick plates... mostly on scrap lugger bins when they get beat up...as far as the 6010.. I prefer the "white' coated over the "red" coated...... white seemed to be just a hair smoother....TOOLS AND TOYSSMAW Mid States Inc. Reply:I like the 6010's better when I weld over galvanized, because I'm too lazy to grind it off first.  It seems to be a smoother running electrode on DC, than 6011's run on DC.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:Proficient is a very subjective term. Lol. I am probably more proficient than your weekend warrior but I am no professional.  I really like the way 7018 runs and would like to be able to use it for just about everything.  I mainly was concerned about getting good penetration with 7018 on thick stuff requiring multiple passes. That is why I inquired about rooting it with a 6010 first.Lincoln Ranger 305gMiller X-Treme 8VS Suitcase FeederLincoln Powermig 210 MPLincoln AC225 TombstoneAmico MMA-160Titanium Easy Flux 125A pile of grinders.

Reply:I personally have never even tried a 6010, because my local big box stores don't carry them. I have burned a ton of 6011, and have no problem with it, but I have no point of reference other than 6013, 7014, and 7018.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:6010 is the code certified rod for root passes is pressure pipe. 6011 is not a code certified rod where I work anyway. I use 2 different rods for steel stick welding. 6010 5p+ and 7018. I don't weld pipe so I'll use the 6010 in the shop at home to fill large gaps or weld dirty material. Most everything else is 7018. At work all I burn is 7018.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
