I've been toying with the idea of getting a used finger brake. Looked at one the other week that was four foot with a capacity of up to 14 ga. steel for $1200. The prices went up from there. I'm sort of thinking that I want at least a five foot that will do 12 ga. to form bumpers, but wonder if that is really going to be overkill.Thoughts?
Reply:I have a 6' finger brake but it will only bend 16ga. full length. I wish i would have held out for one with more capacity. Your best bet is to find them at auctions Patoyota. The new stuff really arent made all that well. The old ones seem to last forever. If you've never heard of them, try www.goindustry.com  They have a listing of auctions for your area and around the world .  Other than that I would say buy the most brake you can afford! Johnny

Reply:The best finger brakes are Chicago, made by Dries and Krump, or D&K. They are american made, have been since the 30's or so.A 4' 12 ga Chicago at $1200 is a steal, and should be jumped on immediately, as a new one is well over 6 grand. The other really good ones are the WA Whitney Universal brakes, which are both a straight brake and a finger brake, but they cost a lot more- and are rare to boot.Next down in quality is Tennsmith, and then there are some National's that are US made.Cheapos are from china, and they show it- mystery metal alloys, tiny sizes of hardware, and generally smaller and cheaper. There is a big price jump when you go to the 5 foot or 6 foot versions, and they get a lot heavier, too. My 4' 12 Ga chicago weighs almost a ton.The 6 footer weighs in at 2650lbs.Here is link to the new ones- http://www.americanmachinetools.com/hand_brake.htmAs you can see, a 5 foot or 6 foot 12 ga brake is one big boy.I have had my 12 ga 4 footer for 5 or 6 years now, and I love it. It will bend most anything, and will outlast me, thats for sure.I would hold out for a chicago though- it will go up, not down in value as it ages.
