Guys, I started a new thread on this topic, because I want it to be very clear. If I am on my soapbox - Forgive me.I ordered a set of Bessey C Clamps today. Several hours later, the gentlemen I was dealing with called me back. He and I had a discussion about clamps made in China and he knew I didn't want them in my shop. Well you guessed it. His distributor told him Bessey C clamps are indeed made in China but to Bessey's specifications. For now, I have canceled the order. Please keep in mind this is only about their C clamps, I do not know about their F or J clamps. Are they good clamps? I am sure they are the best Chinese clamps you can buy. But what is really going on here? Is Germany following USA's lead and outsourcing to China as well?? Does anyone really care?? I believe these are OUR jobs and we should care.Rant off. Make your own decision, just be informed before you lay down your cash.Bill
Reply:It seems like they are manufacturing more and more things overseas and forgetting one thing, people need jobs and money to buy these things. Will   Supports Autism Awareness                            My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .

Reply:Howdy Howdy!  I agree with you 100%.  I am simply stating, that capitalism and the ideas of markets show us that the way thinks work currently, we're F$%#&d.    In 50 years, there won't be any MAJOR price differences around the world in labor.  But we're not there yet.  So, all the business goes to the cheepest country, and gets shipped to the most expensive country.  As simple as that.  Just as a side note.  Walmart brings in 60% of the total chinese imports for the US.  In my state, WA, Walmart also employs the most people who are on state assisted food programs and healthcare.  The debate here, is weather or not it's worth it, when walmart says they create jobs, and bring in taxes, well then we turn back around and taxes support the people that walmart supposedly supports because they pay so low.  just a general rant I guess... We're all F$#$#d.  Brian Lee  Sparkeee27
Reply:It's not Wal-Mart's fault that some of their employees are on food stamps.  Most of their jobs are entry level jobs.  Normal people don't stay in these positions very long.If you want to get people off of food stamps, eliminate the program and make people responsible for themselves.
Reply:If you have such a hate on for the Orient I suggest that you better not be driving a car or truck of any make.  Better turn off your computer also.  My bet that even welding machines have parts made in the Orient.
Reply:I would buy an American computer if there was such a thing.  They used to be, but it all got outsourced because people like you all decided to accept it.
Reply:Why should I be inclined to spend more money to subsidize an American worker in a manufacturing job when the same part can be manufactured more cheaply elsewhere?  Protectionism doesn't work, never has and never will.  Opinions aside, this probably isn't the most appropriate forum to discuss economic policy. As far as Chinese manufacturing is concerned, they can certainly make things to spec, however they are accustomed to knocking out the cheapest part possible for the cheapest price and as such quality is often compromised.  Assuming that a given part is well specified and quality control procedures are rigorous, then I have no doubt that Chinese manufacturers can produce quality components.-Heath
Reply:Even Chinese bearings which have to meet SAE and ASME specs which are very strict are more prone to failure than American made bearings.  The materials they make the bearings out of have to meet ASTM specs.  Even with all of these America mandated specs, they can't make a good bearing.
Reply:I think you may find few good "Made in China" products on the market but the rest willl be sub-standard.I also think you will find a few poor "Made in USA" products on the market and the rest SET THE STANDARD !!All politics aside, Educate yourself so you know what you are buying and then make your own decision. I made mine.
Reply:Hey halbrit I'll bet somebody susidizes your AMERICAN wage so that you can live a good life and be able to afford the things that you have.   jroc
Reply:Actually, if you want to blame anyone, I'd recommend "the great communicator", Ronald Reagan. The Japanese government provided financing so chip companies could sell their stock to the USA for less than the cost of manufacturing, forcing their US competitors (TI,MOS,etc) to either go bankrupt or get out of the market entirely. Reagan could have prevented the dumping, but he elected to ignore the problem instead, and um...here we are. Reply:The most lowly paid workers in the US (or Australia) are far better off than even high paid factory workers in China. In a country of over a billion people and no unions, any job is valued.Companies that answer to shareholders need to make as much profit as possible. Countries that are owned privately, want to make a profit, too.Using Chinese labour (it used to be Korean) is a way for companies to lower costs. We've had a 'Buy Australian' movement for some time, and if it's only going to cost and extra couple of dollars to 'buy Australian', many people will. But if the price difference is significant, the vast majority of people (me included) will opt for the lower priced product, even if we're not always comfortable about it.I went to buy a cut-off saw last year. The locally made one was around $300AUD. The Chinese one was $99AUD. Guess which one I bought. Agreed, with some Chinese products the quality isn't quite there, but that cut-off saw of mine has done alot of cutting. Eralier this year, I needed a big belt sander. I was going to hire one. I bought one instead for less than the hiring fee. Guess where it was made. It's the way it is guys. Locally made goods can't compete on price so they need to find another angle. Nobody has yet. If your car makers think they've got problems now, just wait till those Chinese built cars get a bit more refined.Scott

Reply:I feell the same if it is not made in Canada USA or Germany I don't usually buy it.I am looking for a good bandsaw and found the price was far too much for a north american made saw and found china the cheepest but found Taiwan a little more but extremely better quality than china and still reasonable. It is a shame but we need it and can only afford the Taiwan product. That is why our economies are suffering.Nobody moves nobody gets hurt(safety first)millematic passportmiller 375 plasmacutter
Reply:We're finding alot of the known brands of power tools are drastically cutting their prices to compete with the Chinese products. The fact that they can afford to reduce their margins so dramatically indicates how much 'fat' was in those prices. When the price difference gets down to 20% or so, many people will buy a local product. There is alot of press out here these days about huge corporate salaries. That's where cuts can be made. I suspect in China, apart from workers being paid low wages, there aren't layers and layers of highly paid managers.Scott
