Having done miles of pipe rail over the years, I always dreamed of having a "real" pipe sander but was always shocked by the prices. I always get by with my trusty Makita 9031...but it just doesn't like pipe much. So, not wanting to re-invent the wheel, I decided to retofit my 9031 with a homemade pipe sander kit. Not wanting to harm or permanently alter my old friend...I made it so that I could change it over in less than a minute with just a screwdriver. The only alteration to the Makita was 2 small tapped holes. And of course, I had to buy some 1x 30" belts at 3 for 5 bucks at HD.Anyway, it works like a dream and cost me a total of only $60 for the additional roller and bearing. As a builder of many homebuilt tools, I'm fairly proud of this one. Have many more photos and specs if anyone is interested. Reply:That looks sharp. How far does it wrap the pipe?Tim Beeker.
Reply:Here's a quick "action" pic. It works better than I ever imagined it would. Of course, the 9031 only has a 5 amp motor so you can't go too crazy with pressure. But at $60 versus $1600....it's the balls.   Will post more pics later. Reply:I made a similar tool few years ago. I made mine permanent though because I used a cheap ryobi for power. I would not have cut up that makita either. I would highly recommend the ryobi for conversion, it was cheap and the design lent it self to modification easily. I like how yours has the open side on the front, mine being on the bottom can be a problem in tight spots.http://weldingweb.com/showpost.php?p...&postcount=133 Attached ImagesLast edited by fortyonethirty; 02-10-2013 at 01:41 PM.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:Sweet beltsander mod! Yea...I had explored using a beltsander but mine is a humongous Craftsman so I sought other avenues. The prob with using  the 9031 though, is that it's $200 + so buying it just to convert may be prohibitive to most. But if you have a 9031..you don't have to wreck it and switchover takes less than a minute. Plus this thing really gets into the nooks and crannies. Also, it'll take 1/2" belts for the pipe crotches.  Attached ImagesPOVERTY...is the Mother of InventionMillermatic 211Millermatic 140Miller Thunderbolt XLArcOne 100STS inverter w/TIGThermal Dynamics 38XL Victor Oxy/AcetyleneJancy Slugger Holemaker IIJet 5x6 BandsawNever enough time & sleep.
