Does anyone have a list of formula's for determining the strength in specific steel?I am building a special cart for a lawn sprayer, which needs to handle over 300 lbs. Right now, i'm thinking 1" box tube steel should be strong enough, but i have no clue.Basically i'm looking for someone to tell me the span and weight i could hold with 1" steel or some basic formula's i can use to figure it out. both 1" and 2" steel.I am a new guy, please don't be to harsh.Welding Equipment so far:First Welder: Blue Hawk Flux-MIG 100 (no tanks, so only Flux for me right now)Second Welder: Miller MillerMatic 211 Auto-Set with MVP
Reply:copy a proven design..and go for it.face all times with a positive mental attitude, then and only then will you have done your best.

Reply:Thanks for the input. I've been trying to read the formula's in the machinery handbook... yeah... so... ummm... yeah... not getting it . oh well, thanks for the idea on copying an existing design. i'll go with that.I am a new guy, please don't be to harsh.Welding Equipment so far:First Welder: Blue Hawk Flux-MIG 100 (no tanks, so only Flux for me right now)Second Welder: Miller MillerMatic 211 Auto-Set with MVP

Reply:Reverse engineering, like others said, research ones already built. Take the good, dump the bad. There is too much going on to use simple strength calculations. There are several iPhone apps that will put dimensions on your pictures. Don't reinvent the wheel.
Reply:@ amatoolbox - access the .pdfs from http://www.independencetube.com/down...g_Brochure.pdf (Ref #1) and   http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...20brochure.pdf (Ref #2).  See p.13 of Ref #2 for allowable effective length (KL) for 2" x 2" ~ 1-1/4"x1-1/4" HSS.  If you are enamored with the why?/how?, rip a free copy online of 'Roark's Stress & Strain' and read away.  More formulas, examples, and context than you can subsume in a lifetime.Last edited by ManoKai; 07-22-2014 at 08:46 PM."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:When I build something be it for myself or customer and I have to reverse engineer it I always build a little heavier. I do it cause most things seem to be built to the weakest side of working which usually fails at some point. A little heavier means a project for you will be around for years to come and same for a customer which makes for a happy customer. No calls a year later "you know that ------ I had you make? Well it broke" Or if the do break it, it was probably due to abuse which you can't feel bad about.

Reply:Bistineau, thanks. commented in the other thread, your design is exactly what i needed and actually answered all of my "what do i do here" questions. thanks, it's perfect.Nice work and project!Manokai,  Thanks for the book link, that works perfect for another project i'm working on for a shelf!I am a new guy, please don't be to harsh.Welding Equipment so far:First Welder: Blue Hawk Flux-MIG 100 (no tanks, so only Flux for me right now)Second Welder: Miller MillerMatic 211 Auto-Set with MVP
Reply:Be sure to post up pix of your project when you get it started.Do you need any of the dimensions to get you started off right?
Reply:In this case i am going to make up the dimensions as i need... and will do on the pix, just nobody make fun of my sloppy welds!.I am a new guy, please don't be to harsh.Welding Equipment so far:First Welder: Blue Hawk Flux-MIG 100 (no tanks, so only Flux for me right now)Second Welder: Miller MillerMatic 211 Auto-Set with MVP
Reply:I answered your questions on my trailer thread, about wheels and paint.
Reply:Go to a college used bookstore and pick up a copy of strength of materials - that will get you the basics.  In the back they typically have have the numbers for standard steel shapes. If you are working on something like a table top, it makes a difference how you attach the top.  If you just attach it  in a couple of spots or seam weld it the difference can be huge.Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX
Reply:Buy a copy of 'Design of Weldments'.  Every that has an interest in welding and fabrication should find some time to breeze through it.  It's on amazon for over $100, or new from the Lincoln foundation for about $25.    Happy reading.
