Hi guys! So, Im just wondering if its possible... Or even remotely safe... To make burgers for a gas grill out of black "iron" pipe, or something along those lines.Looking to make a one of a kind propane grill I was just wondering if this is something I should take on myself, or if I should buy the expensive/cheap replacement parts from Lowes, and fabricate around that...Thanks in advance guys... I wanna do this, but I want to do it right/safely...[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009

Reply:Hey lanse I have built a few propane burners through the years for cookers (really nice for keeping food at serving temp while at events) any way you can build it out of any good steel, stainless, iron pipe etc.. Just make sure there is nothing inside or out that will release nasty fumes. Galvanized is very nasty stuff when it gets hot and can have health hazards, I would stay away from that! Basically it works just like a hand held propane torch but with holes along the length and a cap on one end. The other end needs an air inlet (adjustable air hole) and gas jet identical to the ones on a normal propane burner. Depending on your burner size you may need a custom set up.On mine I would build a cap for both sides, one gets welded solid to one end, the other would be loose. I would cut half the top out of the other cap like a half moon (it didn't get welded). Underneath the cap I welded a strap across the opening a little off to one Side so when you turn the half moon cap you get more or less air . Inserted a gas jet fitting in the middle of the cap and used a good adjustable regulator to get a pretty blue flame I also drilled a small hole about every inch down the length of the pipe rotated about 180 degrees and repeated! Start with small holes and go bigger if need be (it's hard to go the other way) It took a little experimentation but they worked great after I played with it a while and figured out the settings.Never hurts to try new things just remember if it is not drilled with burner holes and have an end that pulls air in with the gas it becomes a BOMB so please be careful!!! Might be wort the time to go to your local gas company and get their input , after all they get paid to know that kinda stuff!Good luck!Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!

Reply:I've toyed with the idea as well. My thought was to thread the gas inlet with the same thread as Holley Carburetor jets. That way the gas could be cheaply and quickly tuned. Some guy at the home brew place by me made one with a length of black pipe and mounted a small speaker on the end of the burner. Apparently hooks up to music and the fire pulses to the beat.

Reply:Sorry gravel it's been a few years since I've messed with one. I don't think I have any pics. You can archive the same effect by cutting about 1/4-1/2 of the outside wall from your tube just past your jet probably the same length as width. This will create a vacuum that pulls air in and mixes as the jet of gas rushes by ( make sure it's not too close to your burner holes or else you will have a mini rocket ship engine coming out of your air mix hole.. Seen it happen first hand. Not really dangerous just annoying) then you can figure a way to close the air hole until you get your desired flame!!I hope I explained that so it made sense, because it looks right in my head.Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!

Reply:Here B duh the burner.I can't get good shots. Use a 1" OD /3/4 ID pipe and drill two rows of 1/16 holes 3/8 apart the entire length at 10 and 2 o'clock.Plug that into a standard manifold.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:Nice, Burpee. Never considered doing two rows pf holes separated like that.

Reply:I've built a couple just to say I could. After that if there is anything close to what I need I'll buy it. Drilling rows of itty bitty teeny holes can only hold my attention for about so long. As for the jets & valves I just modify and use something existing from salvage."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:Alright guys, so heres what I have so far! The guy at lowes insisted that it takes some sort of specilty tap to thread a pipe cap for a gas hose, and instead sold me two sets of black iron reducers...So, I guess ill just drill air inlet holes in one of them? Probably the larger of the two?How does this look to you guys?[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:Natural gas and Propane are a bit different so that's number one consideration. Not being a professor of gas grills I'm still pretty sure you're going to need a jet/orifice (think expansion) to get the proper venturi effect. The whole venturi tube & jet arrangement is a exercise in tuning and adjusting. Store bought all that is already done. Home made you get to work it out yourself."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

He would cap one end take a cutting disk and make small cuts down the length, perpendicular to the length. the other end he had a washer welded an inch or so away from the open end and a valve of some sort.... He welded the opening of the valve shut and drilled a small hole... I have no idea how well they worked or if they were safe...- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com
Reply:The easiest solution might be to buy (2) LPG logliter burners and be done with it. Reply:For a neutral flame, burning Lp, you need a really small jet after the flame adjuster valve. You also need an air intake to go with the small jet, both just down stream from the valve and outside of the fire box. Inside the fire box, you need the burner itself of any shape you can imagine, and a bozillion small holes for flames. Look at an existing gas grill, maybe you can scrounge jets and such from an old one.My 'que is made to burn Lp and wood, but I had to reduce the jet size to avoid a rich fuel mix. Reply:I just retired it, I had a Vermont castings grill. The manifold was a box18" long. Three burners were made of stainless tube, crimped and welded on one end, a flat flange welded to the other. I think welds were probably robotic. After about 12 years the steel manifold, and legs rusted out. My boss (Mrs. B) is into instant gratification.
