I have been thinking about having a stand for my tools when I am fabricating or repairing something. The idea I have is to use a rim and a pipe coming upright from the wheel. It would have a place to hold the mig gun, 4 1/2 electric grinder, 3" air grinder, clamps, a tray for soap stone, screw drivers, ect.The idea is that you could organize the tools you need right at your side. Then when you are done you can put everything up.The idea for putting it on a rim is so you can move it to where ever you are working.Anyone ever done something like this?
Reply:You could use 2'' schedule 40 pipe for the riser off the rim. Then get 2 1/2'' schedule 40 pipe and cut in short pieces. The 2 1/2'' will slip right over your 2'' pipe riser. You can weld nuts on the 2 1/2'' stubs for a bolt to lock the piece at any height you desire. Make a shelf that will be welded to the 2 1/2'' , a rectangular bar or flat stock for clamps, or even a tray , box , for the riser. You could even adapt a bracket for a light too. If you are gonna have some weight on it, and don't like one riser just have two 2'' risers instead of one .
Reply:I've done similar in the past. Still have it actually. I built mine as a teenager back when I was still learning so it's rather crude and rough. My main needs back then was a place to safely hang a burning torch, striker, chipping hammer, and hoods. It allowed me to work by myself on some heating bending jobs and since I was always working outside it gave me a place rather than the ground to put my hoods. Mines on a old brake rotor rather than a drum. I also have a tool tray I built back then. As stated before I was always working outside since the shop was to small. I did a lot of small engine / mower work. The tray was made with three of the lift out trays from standard toolboxes. I attached them together with a piece of 3/4" pipe through the middle going down to a plow disc. A handle on top allowed me to carry it to the mower or what ever was being repaired. It gave me a place to keep most needed tools and a place to put some of the fasteners off the mowers.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:only done grinder stand. its an old projector stand that was in skip outside a school.holds 6 4.5" grinders 1x9" grinder all my discs.holds goggles and ear protecters etc Attached Images
Reply:I got some more done on my Tool Tree. I have tacked parts together to see how I like it. I have 4 pegs at the top to hold a helmet, face shield and goggles.Next down is a tray to hold soap stone, tape measure, center punch, pliers, ect. Followed by gun holders and a clamp bar. I don't know what all I am going to put on the grinder bar yet, but for sure the 4 1/2 electric and the 3" air.The bottom tray an hold other tools or parts. I am going to put a couple of pegs on the back side to hold squares.I'm also thinking about putting a holder for the torch when you want to leave it running and bend, or bang on a piece of heated metal. I'll also round some corners and dress it up a little before I paint it. Attached ImagesLast edited by Crabo; 02-09-2013 at 11:08 PM.
Reply:That's pretty neat. I'll bet it will be nice to have all your tools at arms length during fabrication and welding.KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio

Reply:It started when I welded a little piece of pipe to the table to hold the gun.
Reply:I like it Crabo.Got me thinking too, 'cept I'm what's known as a "sprinkler".
