I am in the process of building a log splitter, I know that my HF 180 isn't up to the task for the pusher or wedge, I have an old MW buzz box that will turn up to 225. Is the buzz box up to the task? My next option is a guy I know who is a pro and has a mobile welding set up and I'm sure he would be willing to do the tough stuff for me. I don't want to build a time bomb and I know enough to know that I can't do it with my HF handler. The pieces for the tram consist of 3/4 plate, 1" plate for the ram to pin into. The wedge will be a sliding wedge to allow for a 4 way that slides up and down. Thanks in advance, dave
Reply:225 amps should be enough if the joints are prepared properly.... and you know what you are doing.but since you asked the question it seems that you might not be over qualified!GG
Reply:I know I'm not overly qualified, that's why I came here for advice. Like I said, I know enough to know that I don't know...LOLI guess I will chase down my buddy tomorrow and get him lined up.He's been welding almost longer than I've been alive. And I really don't want to drag the buzz box down from upstairs in the garage. Thanks, daveOn a side note, I looked at a production 3pt log splitter today and not knowing their penetration, their welds are nothing to write home about. I have found that to be true on other products like trailers I have owned in the past. I had a 32' camper that had the main frame sections spliced and welded with what looked to be stick run really fast, I guess it held ok, it was old when I got it. Reply:There is no piece of metal too big to bevel & weld with multiple passes. If you can get the welds positioned flat, 7024 is awesome for these.Constant Current Weldor.
Reply:Much of the challenge is in the design of the splitter. The more welds that are in "compression" the better machine you will have. The 225 buzz box should handle the fabrication OK. Bevel joints, clean out any slag and just keep running stringer beads in the gap.Try and position as many welds in the "flat" position by moving the frame around.Use some new, dry rods that are suited for the application.Good Luck.Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:Thanks for the tips guys. It is a slow project and I just keep pluggin along on it.
