I need some help please!!!!   I have been welding pipe for a while now, 100% x-ray and make them look slick.  Thing is Im getting into something I dont understand....  Im going to test in on a pipeline job 6010 bead or root, and 7010 downhill fill and cap.  Im okay with the root I know I can handle that, but I dont know about downhill fill and cap.  I can only guess that I need to keep that rod pointing up and hot after 3 and 6 but it seems like the slag would run down into my travel and cause a mess.  how do I get from top to bottom and hold the puddle up?  Im pot commited now I just rented a big blue 400 and Ive got a weld test friday 500 miles from home.  Im going to try to practice tomorrow and Wednesday any help or pointers would be awesome!!  thanks hands.
Reply:CALLING SLOW HAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  He is the guy that can help you the most. But I will tell you this, don't take that big blue 400 to test with.  They won't even let you test with that machine.  Most of the pipeline companies require you used, the lincoln sa200, sa250, sa300, 200d, 300d, sae300, classic 1,2,3, vantage 300,400,500 or a miller pipepro 304,350.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A  Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:10:4.  yeah a buddy told me that same thing so I called and talked to em they are going to let it fly on this one and hopefully I can find something else soon.  I want a 300d, but when your renting one to get going the pickings are slim.  Is it that bad of a rig?  I mean am I going to actually have problems welding with the blue?
Reply:anybody?  please...

Reply:Well, besides being grossly biased...I'm told Lincoln's arc is from the rotor, whereas Miller is from the generator side..Not at all sure if Theres truth in that...What I do know is, show up with Blue on any job other than steel erection, you won't be there long. Reply:I have never ran 7010. 6010 downhill is a piece of cake, with an SA 200. Not knowing the machine you're welding with all I can say is set like you're running overhead & adjust it from there. The flux doesn't interfere with the bead, it either washes out of the weld or falls out of the way. Try some downhill practice runs. I think you'll be surprised at how well it welds downhill.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:7010 is the easiest capping rod, just keep some distance from your puddle, turn it down and don't stop on the side ( no man's land ) and you'll be fine, same as 6010 but stacks better and doesn't pin hold as bad.... I just wish we were still aloud to run 7010 aka hippie rod...
