Whats some of your guys techniques on cleaning engine cases before tig welding them? You can wipe it all you want but we all know oil is digested into these things, any tips on getting it out?Miller ab/p 330Hobart champ 16Miller 140Lincoln Power Mig 255Lincoln SA-250
Reply:after your normal cleaning regiment, run the tig torch over the area to be welded at a lower heat. Not enough to melt the material. You will see impurities bubble out. clean again (I use acetone) with a SS brush. repeat. I'll do it a time or two. Then go to town. If the weld is fairly clean you can leave it as is. If you want a little extra you can grind most of the first weld back out (carbide burr) and lay another bead in there. That's the typical approach I take.
Reply:Pass the torch over to burn oil out, then weld a pass with filler (it'll be ugly) and grind it out, might have to repeat, after doing this enough the welds will start going in clean.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com

Reply:One of our best customers (wich is odd because we are an automotive shop and they are a janitorial supply company) sends me cases all the time. long story short I grind the area with a non ferrous carbide bit and brush with a stainless brush while soaking the area with acetone. I make a pass around the area low amp torch only to boil out the junk. Brush and repeat ALOT. Then start adding filler to the edge Wich will look like lava rock pits holes and stuff. Grind and repeat till I get a CLEAN bead then make the final repair with clean material or finally drill ends and fill crack. It ain't fun but can be done. |
