Got together some metal and some heat and this is what I got accomplished.A welding table, a welding cart. 3/8 steel top with 16 ga frame. Still need to add some wheels to it, but it works okay for now. The cart is working out so far, but I thing I am going to cut the back on the top and beef up the bottom to hold the gas in the back. Not too shabby for a very rookie novice welder. Managed to make the wife a quick rose too Last edited by hardheaded; 02-15-2013 at 12:59 PM.Lincoln Pro Mig 140 Bought new for 280

Reply:You might want to consider adding some 2" receiver hitch tubing under your table to hold accessories like your vise, bench grinder and brake. Then you can add them to the table when you need to use them or remove them when you need an open table top. Here's mine to give you an idea. The last two are of a flat one I can set my chop saw on and have the saw table level with the table top to support stock while cutting. I put a receiver at each corner of the table so I can use multiple items at a time or move them around to where they are more convenient to use. I can also use them on the hitch of my truck when I need to. Attached Images
Reply:I might have to check into that. Seems like a good idea. I am just getting into welding so there are certainly a few tricks to learn as I go forward. Next I am going to make a table and end tables for the living room. Thanks for the tips.Lincoln Pro Mig 140 Bought new for 280

Reply:Originally Posted by BD1;2284621. Your goodies , table, and cart look way TOO CLEAN . They will get messy .Receiver tube is awesome as Bistineau stated. I even made a base just for the receiver tube that I can move around beside the one mounted on the table. I bought the 18'' long from HF and cut it  in 6'' piece. Drilled holes, beef up tube end, and installed. [urlhttp://www.harborfreight.com/18-long-2-standard-receiver-tube-69815.html[/url]
Reply:Originally Posted by BistineauI actually did not use receiver tube but made something very close using 2.5x2.5x1/4" angle iron welded together while a piece of 2x2 tubing was sandwiched between to keep the distance right while welding. It leaves a little 1/4" slop in one dimension, but close enough for me. I already had the angle on hand and no extra trip to HF.If you put one on each corner like I did, make the effort to line them up from one corner to the next and lined up with the one next to it. That way you can make table top extensions you can add in the future if you need a longer table on occasions using both receivers on one end or both ends. I used a long enough piece of 2" tubing between the ones on opposite ends of the table when I clamped them up for welding(I can slide a full 20' piece of 2x2 tubing in one receiver and out the one on the other end) and careful measurement to get the other side straight too. That way I can make a table top extension that can be plugged into either side of the table when I need it, I will probably make 2 so as to extend the table in both directions. Make the 2"tubing for the extensions plenty long so they can hang out away from the table top instead of having to butt up close to the top. You can have the gap butted up flush with the table top or move it out a few feet for a wider overall table length depending on your situation at the time.

Reply:Originally Posted by BistineauSorry BD1, didn't realize I was yelling, Jeesh you must be really thin skinned. Thought welder types were tougher than that . I think hardheaded will like these additions to his table if he incorporates them in it. There are many possibilities of what can be mounted/dismounted on the welding table with this set up. It's not my idea originally, just passing on some of what I learned on here.

Reply:Have you made any of the suggested additions to your table yet? Are you thinking about doing any?
Reply:Bistineau: I like the idea of the receiver tube.  I cut my big table down to have more shop room but sometimes need a little more table.  That brings up all sorts of interesting possibilities.1938 Lincoln SA 600 1973 Lincoln SAE 3001984 Lincoln Sa 250DF800 Ford with 10 ton craneVictor and Harris torches.Rolair compressorSouthbend 13" latheAtlas Mill
Reply:If you need more room in your shop, you can send me some of your tools for safe keeping if you can't afford to expand your shop area. Do a forum search for welding table ideas, there are many on here who have done the same thing, I just "Borrowed" the idea for my table and passing it on to others. If you do a little pre-thinking into what possibilities there are BEFORE welding them on it may make many more things possible. Like me thinking about lining them all up to make extensions that will use both on one side or the other or having one for each end at the same time. I just haven't made them yet but the receivers are lined up ready to take them on when I get the need for them.
Reply:I think the freight would be a killer.  That's the way we grow.  take some one else's ideas and adapt them to our purposes.  I have a 40 in. sheet metal break that would work in that.  It already has the tube on it, by accident. I didn't cut the tubes off when I made it.  I also have a good machinest's vice that would work well there.  It's on a truck wheel right now. More clutter.  Might also be a good place to put the new forge.  Take it down and store it outside under cover when not in use.  Man I can think of all sorts of uses here.1938 Lincoln SA 600 1973 Lincoln SAE 3001984 Lincoln Sa 250DF800 Ford with 10 ton craneVictor and Harris torches.Rolair compressorSouthbend 13" latheAtlas Mill

Reply:HARDHEADED, I noticed some grinding marks on your table in the third picture. A sanding disc might do a nicer less aggressive job in cleaning up the table. Just trying to help you spend more money. Oh, you might as well get another grinder too !

Reply:A belt sander works good for clean up too, covers territory faster than the flap discs. That is, if you have access to one. You can use that to get a good start quickly then switch to the disc for final touch up if needed.
