Mom's John Deere rider mower had the spindle torn off the sheet metal tube axle about 10 or so years ago.It was pulling away again where it had been welded previously.Brother A tells Brother B who mentions it to me(Brother C).I go home with some Eutectic Arc-Alloy Repair 3/32" rod, Helmet and Grinder.Find a Farmer neighbor with a welder, hence title of post, he also uses the disclaimer of he can only weld flat to which I tell him no problem I can weld it.He and I take the spindle out, drop a bolt in the hole, heat and bend it back into position.Grind it out, when he says he has only 20 year old rod, I reply no problem! Then he says "Oh, sorry the lens fell out of the helmet", to which I reply no problem I brought mine!I laid one of the best vertical welds I have ever done (actually it was the rod at 65amps)!After he exclaims it is beautiful even in his old eyes!I tell him I was lucky!Only regret is I wish I had taken pictures of the previous repair and my weld.Maybe next time I am home, I will!I had never ran a Forney that I can remember(?) but was impressed at how smooth it ran the rod!
Reply:Forney made a lot of stick machines, and like a Timex, they keep on ticking.

Reply:Sounds like everyone is more than happy, good job.My Father-inlaw had a 1950's Forney multi-tap farm welder that was a beast, and welded like a dream. A grandson has the machine now, but he needs to replace the capacitors. |
