OK, for you heavy iron types out there, a really, really big bender for 2" tube/pipe is being auctioned off by the Lawrence Berkeley Lab surplus outlet in Berkeley, California.  I just saw it yesterday while looking over the small lots that I can afford and can move and store. This thing probably weighs a ton or two.  It is basically a very large, vertical axis, worm-drive gearbox about 3 feet in diameter and 3 feet tall driven by a worm-drive driven in turn by a pair of V-belts from a motor/brake.  Could not see the motor name-plate without a cleaning brush and a flashlight, but I'd guess it is 3-phase and about one horsepower.  An electromagnetic brake is on the motor. The top, where the action takes place, has three heavy steel dies that look like full, round pulleys about 6 or 7 inches in diameter with 1" RADIUS grooves.  I didn't actually study the action of this thing because it is so far out of my capacity and range of interest.  If anyone is interested in more details, I could try to get a better description of it and maybe a photo or two.  The lot description was not yet available from the surplus office but should be by early next week.  It's quite possible that this is not a commercial product, but was custom made by or for Lawrence Berkeley Lab.I can try to get information for anybody interested, but cannot offer any assistance in moving or dealing with the auction office beyond telling you the lot, auction #, and how to contact them.  I could send bid forms to interested people, but the auction office can do it easier.  I'm guessing that the auction will close in two or three weeks.  More info on request.awrightLast edited by awright; 09-16-2006 at 09:07 PM.
Reply:Big??  That ain't big. :')) A couple of years ago our shop built a 3000 ton hydraulic bender to bend large pipe.  The first trial bend was on stuff about three feet in diameter and one inch thick wall.  The thing had something like fifty cylinders pushing horizontally on a huge plate wall.
Reply:That doesnt sound very big to me either- mine will do 2" pipe, and it weighs about 2500lbs, and it is one of the smallest ones they make- well something like the third smallest from the company that made mine. Here is mine rolling some 1 1/4" round stainless.A machine in this size range is 8 to 10 grand new, and should go for 3 to 5 at auction, if in decent working shape. Of course, homemade would go cheaper, as replacement parts and rolls would be unavailable. Now you wanna see a giant one, they look more like this[img]http://www.roundo.com/products/r-15-s.jpg[IMG]

Reply:OK, guys, lighten up out there.  I'll admit yours are bigger than mine.I'm not here to compete on size, and I have no personal investment whatsoever in the bender I described.  I'm just passing along information that I thought might be of interest to someone out there who may like to have a "small one."I did find the description of the item.  They are calling it:"Winder-Coil.  Cable Winder.  Worm Gear Drive, Triple Pulley, Stearns Brake.  Md# PX1708.  Mfg. FMC.  460 volts.  3 ph.  DOE#6100945."While they are calling it a cable winder, it looks for all the world like a bender to me.  Do your due diligence and your own investigation to make sure what it is.It is Lot #1 on Bid Lot Sale #0700 located at 2700 Seventh Street, Berkeley, CA 94710.  Contact person is Tom Hardy @ 510/486-4938.  Bids opening 1200 hours on Friday, October 6th.awright
