I'm looking for a scrap of some large pipe to build a fire pit.  I prolly need a 2ft section of pipe that's 36ish inches in diameter.  My other option would be to cut a load of 4" slats and make a piece.I'm in LI, NY.Any ideas and possible costs? Thanks.
Reply:I have some with 1/2" wall but it would be a LONG road trip to get it. Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Drf255,Something I've found that works pretty good for building a fire ring is a center-less rim from a large agricultural equipment tire.   I know you probably don't have as much of that going on in LINY as here in MT but if you've got any places around you that repair large equipment tires it might be worth checking with them to see what they might have laying about in the way of damaged ones you could get for scrap price.
Reply:I have built many fire pits form triangles of plate. They work well. I put 2" pipe rail a few inches away, and lower than the edge for a foot rail. A square cut out on the bottom for easy clean up, and 2" pipe, horizontally for a skid like base.
Reply:If you do not want to build it from plate and if your scrap yards do not have anything, try contacting a well drilling company. Many large wells have 18"-36" casings. A little wire wheeling/sandblasting you should be good to go.Also look into old water storage tanks used for boilers or hot water storage. Call some local underground utility/mechanical contractor/foundation drilling guys.Last edited by Chris T.; 08-14-2014 at 06:43 PM.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE

Reply:Al, if you want I will run over to Logan Steel in Meriden on Saturday and see what they have lying around. Their inventory of drops and custs is EXTREMELY extensive. They get $1/lb for steel from the "bargain tent" It would be my pleasure to run it down to LI or meet you half way somewhere. its worth a look if you want. Their inventory changes all the time and the quality is somewhere between new steel and scrap steel. Check out the pics  http://logansteel.com/?page_id=365Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:@ Drf255 - got'a guy attempting to source salvaged USN buoys for a future fire pit build.  No word on acquisition timeline yet, but believe we may acquire one or two large diameter spheres in the near-term.  Hit me bro."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Most large water/waste water utility projects have pipe drops lying around. Unfortunately it's almost always ductile iron pipe, the up side is these projects are everywhere. I've supplied many people with fire rings, from 24"-48" ductile iron. Just be sure to beat the concrete lining out. If you can find a place, find a foreman and offer him some cash to cut a piece to your desired length. Bell ends are the best but not as easy to get FYI.Thermal arc 211iCk flex-loc 150 & 130Clamps, saws & grindersHarbor freight 80 amp inverter
