What is the best way to fix a spot where you've burned through? should i be cutting the whole piece off, use the welder to fill it or weld a piece over it?I am a new guy, please don't be to harsh.Welding Equipment so far:First Welder: Blue Hawk Flux-MIG 100 (no tanks, so only Flux for me right now)Second Welder: Miller MillerMatic 211 Auto-Set with MVP

Reply:Depends on what you are welding on.
Reply:1/8th inch box steel, burned through where one piece meets another at a 45 degree angle. Reply:Clean it up, grind if needed, make sure there is no slag hanging on anywhere. Depending on the size of the hole and process used. I'm guessing by your signature it's flux core? Go around the edge of the hole, making sure not to overlap your bead at the starting point. This will keep you from getting slag inclusions. Clean the area again and repeat welding around the hole until it's closed up. If you are welding on sheet metal, you may need to do a series of spot welds, cleaning after each weld. Once you are done grind it smooth. That fixes the problem at hand, you need to figure a way to keep it from happening. Try decreasing voltage or increasing wire feed speed. If it's just really thin stuff try a backing plate. I hope this helps good luck.Thermal arc 211iCk flex-loc 150 & 130Clamps, saws & grindersHarbor freight 80 amp inverter
Reply:Also pushing, pulling the gun will make a difference. So will changing welding position, horizontal is easier than vertical.Thermal arc 211iCk flex-loc 150 & 130Clamps, saws & grindersHarbor freight 80 amp inverter
Reply:Well, congratulations on burning through 1/8" steel with a 100 amp machine. I would not have bet that it could be done.I learned how to weld on 16ga steel. It was for portable horse stall panels. I took the job without ever having struck an arc before in my life.Hey, had kids to feed.I had a friend who had a Lincoln crackerbox and some 5/32 6011 rods.I learned quickly how to fill up holes:-)I would strike an arc, and "paint" a little metal on to one side of the hole quickly, let cool, and do the same on the other side of the hole. After a few times, the hole would get small enough to close it up.don't get too rambunctious, or you will see the little hole replaced by a bigger hole. With wire, you have the advantage of using the trigger to break and start the arc.You can act like you are using a squirt gun, squirt, squirt, a little here, a little there. It will be a skill you can use the rest of your life
Reply:Sounds like you got the whole welding thing figured out, I'll make sure to PM you when I have a question geezerbill...squirt squirt squirt, lol. I've burned through a pretty important 5G buttweld on the CAP going vert-up before....I was devastated. I didn't know what to do, its past the root and hot. I asked my coworkers and we agreed the best plan of action was to clean and feather the start and stop and run 6010 like a root. Well it worked just fine. Lesson to learn is there is nothing that can't be fixed, or cut out completely and redone. We work with metals not wood. AND HAVE FUN!
Reply:If you want to fill it with weld, and you are using the flux core unit, you pull a longer than normal stick out and it will help. If you want you can pound a piece of steel into the hole and weld around it, grind it all down and weld a normal profiled weld and nobody will tell the difference.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
