I'm getting ready to start building a trellis style frame for a motorcycle of mine.  Just wanted to throw up my sketch, for you all to look at and see if anyone with more experience can see any potential issues with the design

Reply:So, how do you intend to calculate your steering stem and swingarm geometry?  Are you going to copy an existing frame?  Keep in mind that minute changes can make a HUGE difference in handling.Steelwill, actually it is more of a Ducati type frame.
Reply:Looksbgoodbin theory. Would need to spec the engine mount dimensions to rear wheel. Consider what forks to height dimensions and rake where desired. All else is what's left to fit.
Reply:I'm building a JIG off an existing frame.  All hard points for the frame ( neck, motor mounts, swingarm pivot, and shock mounts ) will be in the factory locations.  The swingarm will be done in the same fashion with a JIG locating the pivot tube, shock lever mount and axle centerline.
Reply:getting those tight raduis on the tubing under the tank might be tough. will look great if you pull it off though. good luck and have fun
Reply:The trellis work between frame rails will have to be done in a cut and weld fashion.  That does raise a question though.   Placing each piece 90* from the last, forming perfect triangles, would be strongest.  But I have certain points where I need tubes to intersect, like the bottom of the neck and the rear point where the subframe starts.  Does deviating from true 90* compromise strength enough to be of concern? Also, the sides of the swingarm is 2 pieces of round tube running side by side.  Should I weld the tubes together, so it acts like 1 solid member.  Or leave them separate and act like 2 members
Reply:Was the engine originally mounted in a trellis-style frame?  How are you sizing your tubes and wall thicknesses to counteract the stresses of engine torque and steering?  What will the different weight distribution do to the steering and braking characteristics?  Can this be made road legal if it works?

No How are you sizing your tubes and wall thicknesses to counteract the stresses of engine torque and steering?  Tube size is 1.250" for the main tubes and 1.125 for the support and trellis work.  Both in .120 wall flavor.  The stress from the engine won't change.  I'm not designing a frame from scratch, building it based off factory specs.  The trellis work will actually strengthen the neck, which is a weak spot on the OEM frameWhat will the different weight distribution do to the steering and braking characteristics?  Shouldn't change much.  Wont know for sure till everything is built and can weigh it compared to stock.  I only expect to gain a few lbs at most.  And that can be compensated for with springing and ride height adjustments.  Can this be made road legal if it works?Yes, with a dot inspection.  Titled as a custom bike
