Reply:When I was young I remebered seeing a few rods laying around the job. They were like 5 or 6 flux coated 1/8 rods, wrapped together with a wrap flux like coating, and it had a steel cap on the end that was shouldered down to about 5/16. It was along time ago, wish I had one. Does anyone recall these type rods?I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:They use those for flood welding, (it's works better than electro-slag). You should also be able to get them down to 5/16"-3/8" range but even at that you're running 450-800amps...I posted a 3/4" rod some years back along with a 1/2" leaning against my little kemppi (after all, it does say 1500 on the machine). Those are Weld Mold rods used for the same thing the cor-mets are (forge dies, slag pots & other flood weld things). IIRC they liked (if they could) to use a longer water cooled arm setup than was shown in the link above, at about 1800amps with the 3/4"electrodes.Pretty toasty work...Matt

Reply:Big rods......I use 1/2" thick rods with my Plasma welder....only kidding, they're filler rods so they don't count as stick comparison.Wow, who'd want to weld all day with a 3/4" stick rod set-up, the money for that job must be fantastic.....so would the UV radiation.Ian.

Reply:Matt--I am currently working on a little "side project" where I will be turning down pins, large pins, like 10 inch diameter and above. and then subbing chrome back onto them 1/2" thick, then grinding them to size, then re-selling them at a fraction of new price.  Should be very good $$$$$$$ once I get all the little details worked out.  You are right, I use tons of clad steel.  I am using some really good stuff out of Michigan now that is the prettiest clad I have ever used, and is perfectly flat, they really have their processs figured out.  Am using alot of 3/8 on 3/8 and some 1/4 0n 1/4, the chrome is running around 30-35%, and once in the dirt for a few days it plain SHINES!6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
