I bought the Northern Tool bender (Going out of business sale)I don't know how to get real creative yet and have been looking around. The Hossfeld site has an attachment to bend the angle located here:http://www.hossfeldbender.com/toolin...angle_iron.phpfigure 12 at the bottomDoes anyone know how to do this without the special tooling? I did figure out a way, but is not perfect and takes some hammering to touch up.I can't buy the Hossfeld attachment because it wont fit my smaller bender. I hope to start casting dies and such from Aluminum, but that is not guaranteed I will ever get around to. I will post some pictures of the way that sort of worked and hope someone has their own trick.
Reply:I have posted the pictures of what I have accomplished with this. Needledd to say it isn't very efficient.http://public.fotki.com/petersenj20/...our/page2.htmlAlso, any suggestions on a quick way to cut the notch? I have used the saw-zal and angle grinder with disk. The portaband is an idea but I'm not very good with it freehand. I can't seem to get the right angle on the chop saw either since it has to be mounted leg up.
Reply:I use a torch with a small tip but it takes a bit of care. You bends look good. At the root of the notch is, sometimes is wise to create a bit of a mousehole. On the size of angle you are doing it would be less than a quarter inch diameter. It releases the metal on the inside of the corner.
Reply:I must have posted this on the wrong site. I decided to make an attachment. This is one ugly mother, I know, but it worked like gangbusters. On the sample piece in the pictures, I did one pull and by PFM, it nailed 90° at the stop. Lucky me! I guess that may change with thicker material though.I do have a problem. I have suspected that I have a problem, but now it is confirmed. I am one of those 12 steppers. For my intended project I ended up using a larger size of angle that consequently would not fit in the small bender. I bent it in the vice and anvil. I do have an ugly new tool that I can use should the need ever arise though.I also have a couple of other tools to use with it. I have lots of grade 8 bolts (5/8" -5" long) that fit the bender with just a little bit of persuasion. I also made a 5" round die out of a caster wheel I found at work. I guess any size solid wheel will work if you grind the hub to the proper width. Plywood tubing dies... here I come! Attached ImagesLast edited by petersenj20; 11-12-2006 at 09:41 PM.
Reply:i got a bender a wile back and i dont think i have used it once yet???? but thats the first time i saw one set up for angel irn, cool looks like there is a tool for every thing. sorry i cant help but it looks like you got it worked out, most of the time i eather cut and weld or cut out the one side with my plasma, then bend in the vice. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:If you are creative with your cut you can make a radius corner from your angle iron. You cut one leg square with a torch then on the same leg make a "J" shaped cut to remove a section then wrap the angle around the curve of the "J". It takes a bit of practice on some scraps to get the cut dimensions right.
Reply:oh that one i have done, a lil heat helps too and be real slow and patiant. and yep a bit of practice is a good idea also. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time. |
