A fella dropped this off this afternoon at the shop kinda wondering if I should attempt this?? Was thinking of cutting a coper slug same diameter as the bearing race and lay it in there and start welding? Its dam thin material It appears there is very little or no side load on the bearing just basically supports the end of the shaft with a bearing. Open to ideas or suggestions. I dont have a problem welding the material just the size has me concerened. The tooth pik pointing at the crack. The story I got they were pressing the bearing in and went in crooked?? Reply:Looks like someone pressed the bearin in too far. It's doable, I like your copper slug idea. But i wonder what it's going to do distortion wise to the bearing bore. Reply:I'd do it with 1/16 tungsten and .035 filler. Focuse the arc as fine as you can.Miller bobcat 225g  - spoolmatic 1Mm250 - 30a spoolMiller spectrum 375Thermal arc 95 Everlast Ex 250As the boiler turns, these are the days of our lives

Reply:Unless you are prepared to set it up and re-bore it I would step away..Myself?Nope.I would not touch it.No matter how you prep it will be a mess....zap!Last edited by zapster; 03-10-2013 at 10:24 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I think I'd pass.  You know they're gonna blame you if it isn't perfect and they burn up the tranny.Tell 'em next time to put the case in the oven, bearing in the freezer.  It'll drop right in then.My name's not Jim....
Reply:You can look at it a few ways. I would pre heat it and weld it and then machine it after. Tell the customer you will try it,but there is the possibility It could not work. Either way he probably is going to have to buy a new case( they aren't cheap ). The customer has to make the choice, he really has nothing to lose.
Reply:It looks like half the end support is intact.  If the transmission has straight-cut gears, there will be no end thrust.  If it was mine, I'd remove the broken section of the lip and install the bearing with Loctite bearing mount and be done with it. Actually, I would have shrunk the bearing in the case like Boostinjdm's suggested and not broken it in the first place.Dynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
Reply:This is kind of my specialty, I have seen a few and I mean few cases do what you show and it's been because of broken shafts in the transmission, very rare itself.  All you have to do is make sure that bearing is going to fit back in, it will be a ball bearing so just get the recess as close as you can and if it's too much they can just shim that stack of gears.  I'd be tempted to weld a few beads around it and shape it down with a burr until it it looks like original.   The problem is, the customer has a bunch of labor (either theirs or the shops') and parts so if you don't think it will work then don't do it.  On the bright side, I have good luck welding that japanese cast aluminum.

Reply:actually, looking at this again, that looks like our toothpick is pointing to the shifter drum bearing, if that is the case, they are normally slip fit.
