2 SA 200's,  Me and baby boy(18) loaded up after dark tonight to head out tomorrow, supposed to get and early start, have breakfast and on to the jobRight now we will be fabbing 8 ft colums from 8" square tube 1/2 " wall. Guy had his beach house burn down during the last big storm , and to rebuild the codes have gotten crazy, had to bore in helical anchors 30 Ft depth, capped with concrete pier and we will be taking it from there, House has to go on the super structure and be minimum 13 Ft above grade on piers and colums. Then topped with a frame from 10" 33 I beam, perimeter and cross ties. Anyway a couple shots of the SA's Left is a 68 and right is a 61 I picked up a couple of weeks back,    With the repairs I made to it so far I figure it is half paid for after working it today for the first time, hung in good all day, temp around 180 and oil pressure around 25 constant. Thought my idler died but was happy to find that a pin slipped out.  Try to post some pictures of the colums tomorrow.Last edited by kolot; 03-01-2013 at 10:41 PM."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

Reply:Nice Kolot, can't wait to see more pics. I hope to pick up an SA-200 someday. I have a friend with a nice one, fresh rebuilt engine, ready to go, for $3k. It's spoken for, but if it falls through, I will speak up. I'm sure he will hold it as long as I need, to get the funds. Originally Posted by Jimmy_popI keep staring at your truck bed. Drool.

Reply:Sounds like a good job for you and your son.Out of curiosity, in pictures like these, is it possible the bed could have been galvanized steel?  In these pictures, I can't think of what I would look at to determine if it was aluminum or galvanized based soley on pictured appearance.  Maybe there's a simpler solution - are galvanized beds unheard of?  Just something nobody does, so it has to be aluminum?
Reply:I agree jimmy-pop I cant take my eyes off the bed either.  You can tell it is an aluminum bed by the welds. A little fatter than steel and the etch at the toe of the welds indicate the cleaning action of the welding process.
Reply:I got another score on an SA200 yesterday down near the WV border in Pennsylvania. It has the axle under it and a tongue with a 2 5/16" ball receiver end on it. Also has leads on it too. It cost me a whole $350.00 for it plus about $25.00 in gas to go pick it up. I can tell it needs the fuel tank cleaned out and the lines too as it has very dark brown looking fuel and also not getting the fuel to the carburetor run. I will be getting that done first and see if it needs anything else. I will repaint it too as it does have some light surface rust showing but not bad. It was sitting in a barn for the last couple years and the Chicken shi.t on it was free.

Reply:Glad to see your keeping busy and keeping your boy out of trouble. I have see this truck bed in person, it is aluminum, and Kolot made it himself.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Started around day light on Saturday and Sunday, knocked out the 8 colums, stood them up on some of the beams so we could 3 pass all the way around, wrapping the corners. Also made some copes in the beams and some stiffners put in as well. Colums will get set tomorrow or next day, they go about 700 lbs each little preheat with the hawk heaterSon is already spoiled , running Dual shield in the steel mill he is having trouble stepping back a few decades, slowing down and stick welding, says he can knock these out in minutes with his flux core dual shield, I said bring your machine out here I'm on board LOL.   Using Forney rod, 5/32 7018 , really inconsistent, couple rods burn quiet and run nice then about every 3rd it seems they pop and spatter, both had the same problems. Won't use the stuff again, I have a small local guy carrying supplies that I get my gas from, he always treats me good so I try to buy what I can from him. New I was in trouble when they came in a card board box,  Steel tin only from now on,  want to try the Hobart 418 I think you guys have talked about.  Anyway not bad for some part timers."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

Reply:I love my dual shield, but big 7018 or even 7024 if you can do everything flat off an SA200 is nice work.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Does this project happen to be under a seismic code? If not you could have went with some Hobart 21-B. Those SA-200s will love that stuff. Some 1/16-inch, or .068 21-B would be perfect for that project. Just so you know they will also run L-56 Mig wire too. Reply:CEP - I see in your signature that you have the LN 25 feeder. Do you have the CV module on your SA 200's to run it? I have a Miller S32P voltage sensing feeder that works basically the same as the LN 25 and I have trouble getting it to weld right on my SA 200 with out the CV module. Either it burns back and melts on the tip or studders like the wire speed to fast. Ive adjusted it every which way and not much luck. 035 hard wire. 045 dual sheild a little better. Runs great on my Bobcat 250. Sorry to hijack the thread, saw the opportunity to ask a questionWhiskey Tango Foxtrot, Over
Reply:No CV module. I haven't seen one since about the mid 1980s, I think they are about like hen's teeth now a days. Would be nice to have one though! Never tried to run dual shield with my SA-200s, I don't think it would work, but it might. I know Coreshield 8 doesn't like CC. I think I have used an S32P before, that's the one with the blue plastic case, correct? These LN-25 are remarkable feeders.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:The case on mine is black, its the Super S32P, has the contactor and gas solenoid. The dual sheild worked ok with the SA 200, but worked alot better with the bobcat. I wish I had a LN 25, used one before and liked it alot better, but my LWS had this one used when I needed one for a job. Gave 400 complete with gun, didn't think that was too bad. Only used it a few times but its already paid for itself.Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Over

Reply:I have two voltage sensing feeders, and never tried them on CC. I have CV on my shop & engine welder's. Maybe someday when I'm bored."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I have the LN-25 but for the most part I have had bad luck using them CC, We use to use NR232 I think ,and 203 nickel .068 years ago after having problems with 211 MP. the 211 can be dialed in fairly well but is good to 1/2 inch. Truth is I don't do enough lately that I break out the wirefeeder and when I do, I usually use the Weldanpower with CV and that is on the light side power wise. I should start experimenting , Think I will take your advise on the Hobart 21-B. What gas were you using on the hard wire MIG?  I need to get a gun for that though."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:If I remember correctly Hobart, (now) has a 3/4-inch thickness limitation on the 21-B. Before the Northridge earthquake in California, I can't tell you how many 1-inch side bend tests I took with 21-B, and never failed a one. I was using C25 for gas. Seems as I remember I had to search, and search fast for the right stickout length. Then maintain it for the length of the weld. Seems like the proper stickout was the trick. I started a thread about Mig on CC, I think it was DSW, (very knowledgeable guy) said using bigger dia wire was easier. So maybe try .045, or 1/16-inch wire. 1/16 might be a little too big for any real production. . Oh, and to answer your question, “What's better than an SA200”? In my opinion, when it comes to engine drives. Not much better than this combination, and most T-11 wires! Reply:Hitting the beach, debating if I should show this first picture but what the hell, it isn't me, owner trucking his beams to the beach on his home made rack, down the highway, 70 miles, tried to get everyone to drive it, no takers so he did it himselfColumns went up with the JDShot of the columns, looks like a greek garden.ATTACH]342771[/ATTACH]not the biggest crane I have worked with but got the job done, guy is from a local towing company, they really are not a crane service, real slow but real carefull, steel went up no one went down, is a good day! Tacked up for the day, will weld out this weekend IN the background is an orange Mini Ex, that is a separate lot, when this house burned it took the neighbors with it, Piers were put in on the same day at both sites, now we have a little competition going as to who will finish first. So far we are kicking balls. Reply:Well yesterday evening I rebuilt the carburetor and blew out the fuel lines and cleaned the sediment out of the fuel bowl. Cleaned the points up some and then cranked her over. Fired up and ran like it never was sitting for years. It runs smooth but now have ot get the idler working on it as it seems the engine is running at welding speed all the time. Will see whats up today if I get out in the garage to check it out. I am thinking it is the solenoid in the R57 unit as I do not see any action from it at all. It has a code on it of 5496 and a serial that is either 408631 or 458631 as the second number is almost unreadable. Might take one of my jewelers loupes out today and check it out further to see if I can make out the second number in the serial.  Attached Images
Reply:I think I have been Hi jacked, Inkdoggy, hit that little button that says new thread and start your own.    But I do like your 200, there is no better feeling or sound then the first time one busts off after you bought it not running in anticipation it just needs some TLC, congrads. on the new score.Last edited by kolot; 03-12-2013 at 01:10 AM."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400Now if I could just get the auto idler working it might be good. It wants to run high welding speed all the time and will not idle down on its own.  I see the bellows are pushing the rod to speed it up but it just will not pull it back down. It starts up in welding speed and stays there unless I manually pull it down to idle but it will not stay at idle. Also I have no welding spark in a couple settings so I think that may be brushes or something like that.
Reply:Just been through the same problem with the R57. First take it off and dissasemble it, not much to it, make sure the electric solenoid is working, clean it up and make sure it is free. Test it with a battery, no more than 9 volts DC or it will be damaged. under that solenoid is a setup just like a needle valve in a carb, get that freed up and clean. Then is the valve on the side that controls the rate at which it kicks up and down time wise. It needs to have a felt filter in there, often they are missing, The screw seat compresses the felt to slow the rate at which the vacum is bled off. Make sure you linkages aren't sticking and make sure when the vacum pod pulls back the stop on the carb is adjusted in position to pull the butterfly back to the low speed stop screw. Clean the connection at the brush holder and at the welding lead stud."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Finished out at the beach, some more pictures.  Said and done, quite a bit of welding at the connections, still think it should have some sort of lateral bracing at the columns but engineer says " no need" Me I would use cables and turnbuckles at each corner for some diagonal bracing. Might be able to talk the owner into that, he is a builder and seemed to be on board with the thinking.area will get enclosed in and ties or bracing will be hidden anyway."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
