Going to modify out a HF truck crane to mount to my truck and to one of my trailers. Heres the start of my stand.Originally it was going to get hit with 7018, but I was organizing my cabinet with all my weld parts and found a 1/8 tungsten so I gave it a try that way. Never tig'd anything this large before. What do you guys think about the weld? (obviously not done..ran short of time earlier). Both metals are 1/4". Yes the area was ground clean though it doesn't appear to be Attached ImagesMiller ab/p 330Hobart champ 16Miller 140Lincoln Power Mig 255Lincoln SA-250
Reply:Without any settings listed, I'd be real wary about tig for this application. It's really easy to have the machine set too low and make a really pretty bead, but not have enough amps to get decent penetration into the base material. On something like a jib crane, the base is going to take a lot of loading. I'd probably have run 7018 vs tigging it myself. I know 1/8" 7018 will burn in hot enough to get a good bond. You'd need to have the amps cranked up pretty good to do it with tig on 1/4", especially since I don't see a lot of prep on the end..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Ditto. Need more info.
Reply:I figured as much, i had the machine up around 200 and played with the pedal so Im not sure exactly what amps i had it at, but I could see it penetrating. Though I had the same thoughts you did, about the penetration. Which is kind of why I posted this up. The rest is done in 7018, and 2 gussets are going to get added. I don't see the need for multi pass as its only 1/4".Miller ab/p 330Hobart champ 16Miller 140Lincoln Power Mig 255Lincoln SA-250

Reply:Forget the tig, also 1/4" sounds a little thin for a base plate. as well, you know the plate is going to warp when you weld the wide flange... any chance of getting some good tacks to the frame/deck you are welding it to first?UA488
Reply:screwed around with the crane finally. heres some photos. i still have to get a pulley for the top, but otherwise its pretty much done. i added a peice of bridging angle on the bottom of the arm, made a mount for the winch, rewelded most of the harbor freight welds etc.. the last picture is an example of why i did so..lol 7018 on the base plate, 6013 on the rest Attached ImagesMiller ab/p 330Hobart champ 16Miller 140Lincoln Power Mig 255Lincoln SA-250

Reply:I was at northern tool looking at an engine hoist...I've decided to build my own after seeing this.
Reply:Wow, I never would believe that something that bad could come from factory. I cant even begin understand how or why that would have been let go... Those are total text book weld defects, example of what not to do! I think I said it all! Gross!Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:What made you pick 1/4" and not something thicker like 3/8"?  Also, I'm not saying that a single pass is wrong, but just a question rather, would doing a 3-pass on the base add more strength to it? Just wondering.

Reply:I had 1/4" laying around. It will be more than enough for what im going to pick with itMiller ab/p 330Hobart champ 16Miller 140Lincoln Power Mig 255Lincoln SA-250
Reply:i cant agree about the tigging. if you get a nice puddle when the arc comes on, you get penetration..no?
