Hi im new to this forum and welding in general.  I have been pretty sucessful at welding with 7014 but when i try to use 7018 sticks i can't seem to keep a bead going.  I have to wonder if my dinosaur machine just doesn't have the capability.  Is a marquette model 10-120.  It's a single phase 230 v, 180 max amp 20% duty cycle machine.  I read somewhere that its possible it doesn't have enough open circuit? its an AC arc welder prob circa 1950-1960.  I'm basically trying to figure out if i have to pony up for a new machine, and if i do have to shell out that cash id like to hear from more experienced people thats what i have to do.

Reply:ive tried two different rods "7018 DC+/AC(lincoln electric)" and "7018 (hobart)DCEP or Ac".  I'll see if i can't find AC specific rods.
Reply:That should do it.I had never tried them before, few months ago a member from another site came over for me to help him with his welding. He brought some 7018 AC, I ran a few of them, WOW! Child's play! You may have a problem with your machine, or maybe you have a technique problem.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:You need AC only 7018 rods for your ac only arc welder. That machine will not run dc 7018 or dc/ac 7018 worth a darn.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:they are right . you need ac rods for that buzz box. You can get them at your local welding shop.
Reply:you might want to call you local welding shop they may have a can open already they will sell you cheep. If you get some ac rods like the others said you should be fine. The good old buzz box
Reply:You know that 7018 is a drag rod too right?   once it starts you rest it on the base metal and drag it and feed the rod into the weld.  You should be able to feel the rod touching the base metal as you weld. different from say 6011 or 6013..Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Home Depot and Lowes sells Lincoln 7018 AC limited input rods buy some 1/8 run it hot , stringer beads and touch and drag them .
Reply:Went and bought 7018AC rods, no dice.  I'm starting to think its this welder.  I replaced the ground clamp for ****s and I'm gonna pull the cover and clean the dust off everything but im pretty convinced this machine doesn't have a capability.

Reply:Just for kicks I tried the Lincoln 7018 ac/dc on AC, couldn't keep the arc either until I went WAY up in amps.I was taught to maintain arc length (about the same as rod diameter, the metal rod not including the flux coating, is a good rule of thumb) as well, like the CLAMS thing.Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 and WP17. 75A AC is for pipe thawing!HH 140 - new addtion 9/2012.I didn't agree, but hoped for Hope and Change.I got change for myself and my family: for the worse. This is the reality of: Barackalypse Now. Reply:why not just stick with the 7014 even 6011 or 6013.   the welds are just as strong and 7014 runs like butter.
Reply:I might have too.  I was told i would get better penetration with the 7018's.  I'm welding a door for a can crusher so it needs to withstand some serious pressure.  I was told 7014's are good but 7018 are better for penetration on thicker metal.
Reply:Same polarity, same amps, same size, same penetration. The only difference is flux coating on the electrode and hence the requirement of a Low Hydrogen filler metal is the big difference..
Reply:Where you located ?  There maybe a member that would let you try their machine. Nothing wrong about upgrading to a new machine. You may even consider a stick tig machinelike a Miller syncro 200.
Reply:Don't EVEN say AC rods are bad. The guru's here will give you all the advice in the world, no pics, but a lot of advice.  AC 7018 is a good rod, otherwise Lincoln would have not spent the time on it.Crank the machine to 135amps, and let it rock 'n roll"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:I appreciate everybodys insight on here, lots of knowledge on here for sure.I'm located in Aurora,IL.  I've been looking at a new machine to be able to do different stuff as well.  Has anybody in here gotten to use any of the new thermal arc multi-process machines?  I had my eye on the 252i.  I probably woudn't do much aluminum tig welding but it would be nice to have a well rounded machine to most stuff up to 1/2".  Anybody had any experience with these machines?
Reply:It appears that the reason for this welder not being capable could have to do with the newer connector the electrician wired it with.  After taking off the cover one of the wires  is capped.  Fortunately the machine still has its uses.
