OK I'm new to welding but being a female welder I do have 1 question to ask which I personally did not think of myself.  Are women allowed to still work if they are pregnant if so what is the cut off date for them or can they weld during the entire 9 months if of course allowed by the doctor.  Thank you in advance for your responses.
Reply:Heat, dehydration, heavy lifting.   Three things that most welders deal with that do not mix well with pregnancy.   As far as electrical currents effecting the baby,  you shouldn't have    electric passing through you if you are wearing your proper gear.   That's just off the top of my sleep deprived head,  there might be someone here who is a doctor or knows something I don'tThermal Arc  Power-Tech 10/270  stick welderLincoln buzz-boxPurox O/A setupNothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool

Reply:My wife is pregnant and is also a nurse. She's told me welding fumes are harmful enough to an adult, let alone a baby. Even though it's inside you, the fumes you breathe in are transmitted through your blood and into the baby. That's why smoking, or even second hand smoke, is so dangerous to the fetus. Not only the welding fumes, elevated levels of Argon also pose a risk to the body. For men, its a leading cause of prostate cancer. Not sure what it does for women. But for you own health as well as the baby's, wear a good respirator or invest in a PAPR welding hood, as well as stay hydrated and avoid heavy lifting.John 3:16(2) Miller Pheonix 456(2) Millermertic 252Dynasty 210DXHobart 210MVPDoringer D350 SA Cold SawScotchman 350LT Cold SawWebb 10x50 MillWebb 15x40 LatheGeka Bendicrop Ironworker
Reply:Are in a fab shop, pipe rack,  in a ditch, welding carbon, stainless tig or stick, chromium. ... all these things will affect what and how much of what you are exposed to.  As a third generation welder, I call bs on prostate cancer. My local hall sends us to Mt. Sinai hospital for yearly exams after 20 years of service. Been doing this for the last 4 decades. Never has any of our welders been told welding give you but cancer. Lung cancer maybe. sent while goofing off at workLong after the price is forgotten, the quality will remain. Both of my Poppy's 1954 Short Hoods -Third generation to weld with it and teaching a fourthSA 2## - Bought and sold more than I can remember or care to list, 8 in the shop right now
Reply:I guess penetration jokes are a no-no, seeing as you already are pregnant  As said above, get yourself a helmet with a motor unit on your back, so you inhale filtered air.And don't weld stainless or work with thoriated tungstens as long as you're pregnant...No heavy lifting now, and even for a few months after you give birth.Make sure you dont stand inbetween the ground lead and the torch lead, even though this is probably a very minor risk but when you keep those two close together you can't create large magnetic fields inbetween them - for which part this really holds ground, I am not sure, but it also can't hurt...

Reply:Pregnant, not pregnant, probably doesn't really matter.  You're either killing yourself, or the two of youProbably the biggest dirty secret in the industry is the harmful effects of welding fumes.  Can't tell me they're safer than cigarettes  And you get all the anti smoking morons waving their hands in front of their face OUTSIDE IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS if you even pass within 20 yards puffing on a smokeEver look at the little sheet that's in a box of rods??"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:I doubt you will have any issues and I don't have any experience with this but with my crazy opinion, I would say that besides the welding fumes which really can be kept to a minimum, I would be careful with using a grinder or making other loud noises. They say babies can hear noises like music etc, but you can't block out all the sounds of a grinder on certain materials like sheet metal or the banging of getting parts to sit in a fixture correctly... You can use PPE like earplugs FR clothing etc on yourself but you might google effects of sound on unborn babies... Just something to think about and it may not even affect you. Good welders grind less...,
Reply:I think you would be nuts to continue welding. If you don't have a choice though you don't have a choice.

IN short the USA prenantal and post care is not good compared to other countries, yes we have the coolest gadgets, but they dont' seem to help.   Id' trust your own common sense over what any doctor told you. Especially men OBGYN's, men welder's and anyone with a ***** for that matter.

Reply:phillip> "I get all the woman's lib stuff" Really>>>? Would you please enlighten me.  I still don't "get it" and I'm pushing 60. None of my girlfriends or their daughters "get it" either. No bra burning by us and we know how to say thank you and mean it when a man opens a door or offers to lift something for us. --storeman> Me chime in>>>? Eeeesh…. I’ve been welding for less than 3 months and am well past the childbearing years but… I was pregnant twice in my mid 30’s. Both pregnancies ended with mid-term miscarriages…. not career related. Sometimes…. one does everything right down to changing cat litter boxes and gardening with gloves while wearing an N95 mask and things still don’t work out as planned… God does have this tendency of throwing curve balls at all of us… when we least expect them. Thoughts off the top of my head would be there are much higher-risk professions out there a woman could choose. Emergency medical technician and LPN come to mind… so does firefighter… I’m sure there are others.  I’m not an obstetrician but as a female who has been pregnant before…. I’ll toss in my .02 ¢ ….. I truly don’t see why a healthy woman having a low-risk normal pregnancy working in a “safe” environment couldn’t continue working until the day she delivers…. barring complications and issues such as a back problem previously mentioned by shovelon and there’s disability for that or possibly a temporary job reassignment.  --perezv.ignite> Chivalry isn’t dead in the welding industry as you can see by many of the replies you’ve received.  What better work environment than amongst a bunch of men who genuinely care about a woman’s well being and that of an unborn child. I’m sure you’ll choose an obstetrician capable of understanding the demands and risks associated with your job well qualified to make recommendations that you will either follow or you won’t. Never forget….. you’re the expert on your body although there may be those who would have you believe otherwise and you will choose when to start maternity leave… trust your instincts…. they’re a gift given to you for a reason.  In my dreams would I have a daughter-in-law like you who wants a baby and…. is actually thinking ahead. Paleeeease marry one of our sons so I won’t be reduced to poking holes in their rubbers some day.  Psssst….ignore CEP’s comments….  He’s obviously got a silly bug in him this morning….. I’ve no doubt his daughters and grandchildren are worth every penny they cost him. Also too, I don’t know what combo welding is but…. it sounds like fun. --Hi ho… hi ho…. it’s off to weld I go. Reply:There are very few women who weld.... professionals like you or hobbyists like me. Because of the disproportionately low number of us out there.... there are very few of us posting in these forums.... not that we're not welcomed with open arms.... just that there aren't that many of us and I suspect the majority are full time weldors.... who are too darn tired when they come home from work to hop online here or anywhere else. --Although I've never crossed paths with her, this is one woman you might want to private message, http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...highlight=baby. She stopped back in to post a little after having a baby then disappeared again.... probably because of new demands placed on her keeping up with a new marriage and a little one. Cabbagehats is another member I think might be a female, http://weldingweb.com/member.php?492671-Cabbagehats. I'm not sure. The writing style seems to be that of a female but.... I don't know. I actually thought there were a lot more women here when I 1st joined because of avatars chosen by some men.... Bisteneau and CEP come to mind. They're both definitely men so I wouldn't contact them via PM..... their avatars are just the equivalent of pin-ups in a toolbox. FWIW.... nobody around here seems to care what gender anyone is.... myself included so..... there may be other women out there that a moderator could steer you to. -- In real life I only know two women who weld. One is gay (has a wife and no children) and is a union superintendent and the other is my girlfriends newer daughter …. she would be about 30 years old now. My girlfriend’s husband passed away 15 years ago. She remarried 10 years ago. My girlfriend has one son from her previous marriage…. her husband has two daughters and three sons from his previous marriage.  Together they have 6 kids and 10 wonderful grandchildren that I see from time to time because she babysits them on their days off….. all their kids and kids’ spouses work full time so they drop them off at grandma’s house. Three of their grandchildren are the kids of the daughter who welds professionally…. I have no clue what kind of welding she does. It’s my girlfriend’s 60th birthday tomorrow. Her husband is having a surprise party for her. He invited all her friends so we’re going and all their kids and grandchildren will be there. Perfect timing because I haven’t seen that daughter in a few years…. only her kids…..  I’ll for sure ask her for details for you. I know she welded when she was pregnant.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:I’d be happy with just one daughter in law who wasn’t fru fru who at least was interested in having 1 kid. So far… none of the young ladies they’ve dated or are currently dating are interested in a traditional family…. as in one with children. One is a dancer…. a ballerina….. she’s at the university completing a 4 year degree in the performing arts. She’s too worried about keeping her “girlish” figure to the day she dies that she’s not capable of entertaining the idea of having a kid. I admittedly look at her and cringe… everything about her is perfect…. every hair is in place and even her nails are always perfectly manicured….. that’s because she does nothing but dance….. she doesn’t clean up after herself or do her own laundry and…..  she cooks by making restaurant reservations. Another is a 3rd year veterinary student; she likes cats better than kids and isn’t shy about sharing that preference. The others aren’t worth mentioning because the relationships are too new. The last time I checked…. arranged marriages didn’t exactly go over in the US. That means back to square one (poking holes in rubbers) if they don't start bringing young ladies like you home…. --I’m leaving for that surprise birthday party in a few minutes and will NOT forget to ask my girlfriend’s daughter how it went for her when she was “prego”. Reply:You may want to do some research on EMF as it pertains to pregnancy since most electric welders produce it. Especially the transformer and generator style welders. Good luck with your search for information.
Reply:Some day I'll expand on the delivery made in our little 4-man advisory team hooch in the middle of nowhere in the southern-most delta region of  Viet Nam (1965-first tour).  Woman carried (by other women) in from working the rice paddies with a foot protruding.  Gave a breach birth on our folding "dining table" assisted by our medic and the other 3 of us. Reply:perezv.ignite> She puts me to shame!!! She MIGs, TIGs, stick welds, is trained on using a press machine and a drilling machine and some other machinery that she rattled off and couldn’t be happier. She said for her 1st pregnancy she gained too much weight and was pulled from the field and ended up being reassigned to a line job next to the restrooms so she could pee whenever she wanted and could alternate sitting and standing throughout the day. She said one of the sweetest things she remembers is bringing in a little oscillating fan for herself and coming in the next day and finding that some of her co-workers (all men) had brought in fans from home and that her boss had ordered a big fan for her. I believe her…. the welders I’ve met are all “manly” on the outside and salt of the earth mush inside…. like…. someoneyoumentionedwhoshallremainunnamed.  Anywhooo…. she worked until a month before her delivery date. She said she probably could have worked longer if she hadn’t been so miserable from eating everything in sight. She said she gained about 75 pounds which was a big no no.  She’s tiny…. only about 105 lbs. I never saw her when she was pregnant but….with an additional 75 lbs on her…. she must have looked “harpoonable”. Poor thing. --2nd pregnancy didn’t go so well. Not because of her career choice but because she was having twins and started over eating again. I think she said she only gained 50 lbs but hadn’t lost all the weight from the 1st pregnancy so who knows what she went up to…. I didn’t have the heart to ask. Too many complications with the pregnancy to mention. She ended up at home on bed rest for her entire 3rd trimester.  It happens. She went back to work 12 weeks after she delivered and they reassigned her to the line again so she could ease herself back into working and pump milk when she needed to…. she breast fed her 1st born until he was 6 months old and was given time to pump at work in the boss’ office after she delivered both times. She said with twins it was too hard breast feeding and gave up pumping and went back to the field about a month later.  She mentioned not liking something called batch work on the line anyway. I meant to ask her what exactly batch work was but forgot. Maybe you or somebody else here knows. --She said her insurance is excellent and so is the family she works for. Soon as the twins were in full-day kindergarten, they changed her hours from 8 to 4:30 to 6:30 to 3PM  so she could be home before the bus dropped all the kids off from school. She said that saved them a lot of money because they didn’t have to pay for after school care anymore and all she had to do was ask. She says her husband has been snipped because she wanted the baby factory shut down after the twins…. but if she had to do it over again, she’d be more careful watching what she ate.  Bending and twisting to weld in awkward positions became next to impossible with her huge gut and thunder thighs (her exact words not mine) not to mention how tired she got and the back problems she brought on herself.  She has two suggestions for “prego” female weldors….. definitely watch what you eat so you don’t end up like her and if you do gain too much weight…. avoid job assignments any place you might have to run like an inner city public school.--That’s it….  if we’re welders and “prego”….. we’re not supposed to eat ourselves into oblivion…. the low down according to my girlfriend’s daughter.  Her kids are healthy, happy, and well adjusted.--Nighty night.
