To start, I already have a plasma, a Miller spectrum 300, that does great on thinner, will do 1/4 but that's about the limit.Lately, I have had need to cut a bit of 11ga to 1/8" sheet steel into large panels.  The plasma does it, but takes a bit longer setting up edge guides (and getting the offset correct for the guide vs. the kerf) and making the cut itself.  Then having to clean up the slag a bit on the back side of the cut.Would I be better/straighter/faster/happier/whatever with one of the Evolution or Milwaukee metal-cutting circular saws?  I've thought about setting up a jig for the plasma, like a woodworking panel saw, so cuts will always be 100% perpendicular to an adjacent edge, and hopefully faster by saving some setup time.  Anybody tried something like this?
Reply:The milwaukee saws work well but there would still be a need for some sort of straight edge.  With all the guards the saws have its pretty hard to see the line you are cutting.  They work just like a wood skill saw, the lines are straight but not perfect, even when you cut very slow.  There is no slag to clean or chip, the edges they leave are very nice, could save time there. How big are the panels? Shear maybe?
Reply:panels range anywhere from 12x12 to 24x48 typ.Shear would be nice, but my work/need is unpredictable...costs for one-off stuff would be too much.  Would be nice to own a shear that could do 1/8 x 48.
