I used my torch setup tonight to cut some leaf mounts off an axle.  What is the best way to get the left over metal off the axle?  Just use a grinder?  I ground 1 off using my 4" grinder and its painstakingly slow.  Anybody got any good suggestions? Thanks!
Reply:I always use the scarfing/gouging tip for those jobs. With practice you can remove almost all weld w/o undercutting what you're removing it from.                          MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:try using a cuting disk on your grinder man and then keep grinding thats what i did took only an hour or so to do two axles..
Reply:Hey jeep07, That's only about 10" or so of weld right? Shouldn't be too painfully slow. Are you using a Powerful grinder and a good stone?NEVER Let oil come in contact with oxygen.   I will not start stupid threads.Don't forget the upcoming air bumper test!
Reply:Yes scarfing is a good way and is fairly easy just remember only get the metal you want to get rid of hot.
Reply:If you are going to weld the mounts back on in another position, I would go very slowly and keep the housing cool. Years ago,I took a 1951 Mercury Spicer rear axle to a welder to have the mounts cut off, moved inward 2" and then re-welded for use in a different car. He did a nice-looking job. The only problem was that the axles wouldn't go back in. The housing had warped about /14" on each side. I took it to a specialty welding shop on L.A and had it heat-straightened in a gigantic lathe. It taught me a lesson.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
Reply:Yes I know what you mean. I have done plenty of them on jeeps and other 4x4s take your time with them. I usually leave them on if I'm doing a spring over.  I have made my own spring purches six inch to help prevent some minor axle wrap, but thats another story.I start out w/ the torch or plasma then thin cutting wheel and finally the grinding wheel. I can see how maybe using some sort of air die grinder or something of that  nature would take awhile; however , keep in mind you need to be carefull w/ that axle housing not getting it too hot on the other hand they are pretty forgiving.  I say take you time.  Anyway good luck. weld it like you own it
