When you cant buy it, make it! (love the independence of having a welder)I needed 2 rectangular funnels for a science project. They need to be butted up against one another. I checked local stores and the internet and could not find what I needed so I made one that will be perfect for my application (actually better than what I could buy). All bends were made with a shop press. Picture guide:1.Start with a nasty piece of flat sheet metal 14 gauge (Humvee door)2.Lay out lines.3.Drill hole for fluid to exit.4.Clean it up with grinder.5.I bent the lips with a shop press. I tried my homemade sheet metal brake but the welding table it is clamped to does not weigh enough. I was picking up the table trying to bend the 18 lip.6.To make the bend for the funnel I made a small die (9 long.)Iit fits inside the edges of the lips. It is simply a piece of angle iron with a piece of flat stock welded to it. This is so as not to destroy the lip bends. I placed it on the underside of the top die of my shop press. 7.Funnel end mounted.8.Finished product9.Finished product. Attached ImagesDave ReberWadsworth Ohio

Reply:Nice. I might have to copy the design... good funnels are always in short supply around the shop. What is the experiment your planning?
Reply:X2 Forhire...hope the Hmmwv driver didn't mind...how will it be used?
Reply:Was that door off of a military hummvy? If so I hope you wore a resperaitor removing the paint ......carc paint is wicked bad for you .....and if I remember right all the body panels on a hummer are alum. Unless I'm mistaken1979 sa 200victor 100several bfh's several pitbulls (for holding down the floor)
Reply:I hope it was not off a military humve. It was not aluminum. I got it out off a scrap bin when I was cleaning out a garage. **** just my luck.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:It depends on the model #, Older 1008's had steal doors....But they were CARC painted....
Reply:The CARC type paint risks are greatest while spraying it on. Although breathing any grinding metal/paint dust isn't that great for you either, but you know that already.I do like your funnel though. Nice work.

Reply:well regulation says if you have to weld or cut anything painted with carc it must be removed 18 inches away from the weld or cut,,,,but yes carc is much more hazrdus in a vapor form ....just fyi in 12 years i never ground away 18inches most of the time it was just enough to clear a path for my weld lol...just trying to look out for others....and about the steel or aluminum doors i never had to do any work on them if they were jacked up we ordered new doors but all the body pannels are either aluminum or fiberglass1979 sa 200victor 100several bfh's several pitbulls (for holding down the floor) |
