Reply:Yea, why buy it for  $ 3.95 when you can make it for free.  Just set up ,dig out tools, make mess , clean up, and install. there two hours. But, look at all the fun you had. As a bonus you used up some scrap. Oh, never scrap just small pieces.
Reply:They look nice! . . Now you gave me an idea on what to do with my small scrap pieces! I never throw away scrap pieces of metal either! . . When I need a small piece, I know where to look! Reply:Who needs a mill, I do' need no stinkin' mill!! Fab4fun is right about file training, I aprenticed as a Tool & Die maker and spent my first 6 months learning how to file, it truly is a lost art. Those plates might draw citical reviews if they were in the Dining Room, but for the garage they're just fine. Fexal's lesson on this task is that he now knows about filing to a finish. I bet the next set are flawless and mounted in the kid's room. Keep up the good work!  When a welder tells you to "stick it", what do they really mean?"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." - George Orwell

Reply:Originally Posted by DSWI can still remember learning to file alum in Jr High shop class, and the importance of keeping the file clean and preventing it from loading up, so you didn't put in more gouges than you were taking out, and moving down in coarseness depending on what sort of finish you were working to. We were taking alum castings we'd made down to a mirror finish in some areas. Saw cut to remove the casting spurs, Double cut file to take the bulk of the material down, single cut file to get it even closer, then progressively finer grits of sand paper before finally moving on to buffing compounds.
