This was my morning project. I had to build a boom pole for a hi lo blade so they could do a radiator swap for a in the field repair on a piece of heavy equipment. Fairly simple all stick welded 1/8 and 5/32 7018. They wanted something quick and told me to slap something together and I told them to hold there horses because someone will eventually use it outside what was intended for and get hurt. So I beefed it up a little. Such a rush, it was finished in two hours first thing this morning and still sitting there when I left   Attached ImagesI hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:Good call on the bar on the top, I assume you might have one on the bottom.  That is quite a bit stronger than plating the sides actually.

I work as a welder in a shop that rebuilds heavy equipment, theres only four of us and close to sixty animal mechanics that shoot from the hip and work dangerously. Most of our specialty tools are all built on site or in shop, so I look out for everyones best interest in knowing that some tools could only do so much, so go look for the correct one and don't be so lazy. If I over built this too much it would get abused for something it wasn't intended for. I had to yell at a guy this afternoon who already was using it with a old v belt as a strap to hang something. No chain on the rear pad eye teather and blades tilted slightly down. Did'nt even get out the door yet and some meat head was already proving my point!   I went off on the guy and he was speechless looking at me like i'm nuts

Reply:Nice work. However, as much as I hate to be a negative nilly, find out the weight of the radiator the customer wants to use it for.CYA my friend. Add 25% and load test it with certified weights, then put a load rating label on it, painted or not, take pictures and get a hold harmless or other sign off from the customer. Once that goes out of the shop......... ???

Reply:I don't see much danger in it. If someone overloads it it's gonna fold up at the end of the rectangular. Of course Mike's mechanics know enough not to stand under a suspended load,LOL!! Reply:Not very PC of you.  Maybe I'm just "mentally challenged"?I'm in your corner when it comes to trying to make a living in the USA.Since you asked. I was in the automotive field for 20+ years untill 1989. Then I went into the Millwrights for 23 years. Those experiences gave me the opportunity to serve within several global corporations. For their insurance purposes they were constantly looking over their shoulder. Corporate counsil was responsible for the "rules" for contractors. Lessions learned via lawsuits.NOTHING moved forward untill safety and engineering standards were researched and approved. You know - safety first.Believe me, ask your supervisor. If you're company, or you, are somehow immune too those, go for it.Welcome to America. Don't like it, tell your employer to take it overseas like most of the rest.

Reply:You really knocked it out of the park with that thing. In 2 hours they really got thier moneys worth out of you. Good job Mike.I would have put a sticker on it that said "for radiators only" and shoved it out the door.   You can't make a boom that can't be buckled by somebody some how. They say they want it for a radiator then use it to pick up a cat track, chits gonna happen. I bent a spoon the other day dipping ice cream.  They make ice cream dippers for that."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:i say go back and build a truss on that flatbar

Reply:Originally Posted by manningYou wouldn't believe how close you are to reality. We market most of our farm's milk as ice cream we make on the farm. We've been confronted by an angry customer who bent their spoon in a tub of our ice cream. They "never had a problem with the spoon until they tried it in our ice cream." We didn't encourage a lawsuit against their freezer manufacturer and instead offered a pre-softened tub of ice cream to appease the customer. I don't know what happened to the spoon.

Reply:Originally Posted by cd19Ahhhhh,  let me try to see if I can explain this simply....     Imagine an "I" beam.  now imagine an I beam with no flanges on the top and bottom.   You can see that the top and bottom flange is all the strength, the web for the most part just keeps it all rigid and separated.   Good examples would be the wood floor joices that are 2x boards for the flange and OSB web, or metal Bar Joice.   It's not a direct example but you can get the idea.  Obviously having an appropriate width and thickness flatbar on the top and bottom is going to change things too but that is where an actual engineer comes into play.  The OP more than likely just used his engineer on the go experience to build some "overkill" safety factor into this pole so that it will safely lift what he needs.
Reply:Originally Posted by jamesyarbroughI kinda disagree. Not because I'm an engineer or anything but well let me put it like this.Have you ever put flatstock in a vise and belt it by had? Its pretty easy. But if you turn the flatstock and try to bend it long way its pretty dang hard to do. Otherwise people would just lay floor joists flat instead of standing them on the side for more strength. One way your bending 1 1/2 of wood and the other you are bending 3 1/2 inches. The same thing goes with metal.
Reply:The square tube had 1/4in wall which was plenty, the only reason I added the flat strap was to help add strength to the seam, but carry on guys I know your just proving you points  If I wanted I could have made this strong enough to lift the rear wheels of the hi lo off the ground, but like I said it was just a simple project that happened to still be sitting there so I took a pic. I may have to start sneaking other pics of the cool nice stuff I build at work. It just raises to many eyebrows when you start taking pictures. Reply:Originally Posted by cd19Your right that a piece of bar stood on edge is stronger than playing down, but when you add the flange to the top and bottom, the Web part can be much lighter while massively increasing strength.  Remember the flange on an I beam is under compression or tension depending on top or bottom. Its not utilizing the flange part the way your thinking.
Reply:Originally Posted by dubl_tThanks cd, that kinda puts a different perspective on it.  If I'm reading you correctly, in the case of the I beam, the strength comes from the upper and lower flanges; not necessarily the web.  I always thought the strength came from the web, that the flanges were there to keep it from twisting.MIke, nice pole.  Sorry for the hijack, if you want us to take this elsewhere we will.  Just trying to learn here.
