Today I opened up a new can of 7018. Before I could get the top off, it opened up its own can of whoopazz. We'll see how many stitches I get outta this one.Teach Ag Mech - Mike At Home:Lincoln Electric AC225Miller Challenger 172Gas AxeWork:eclectic bunch of 90's vintage blue boxes

Reply:I open those cans with a torch, I have never damaged the rods doing it and the rods are way easier to pull out of the can with the entire end gone, the melted steel at the end of the can is dull and won't cut my hands or gloves.Take your cutting torch, set the flame with way too much oxygen, point the flame away from the rods, and cut all the way around the can 1/4" back from the crimped end with the edge of the can hanging off the end of the table.I have seen too many guys cut while either opening those cans, getting rods out of those cans, or getting cut by the metal piece left from opening those cans. The torch is the only way I do it and the only way I ever will, be warned though your gonna burn the MSDS that is inside the can, so if you need that sheet for some reason you'll have to open at least one can some other way.The worst thing I can think of happening is if everything I ever welded instantly became UNWELDED
Reply:I tried the flap disc idea and had great success. The whole box gets transferred straight into my Phoenix rod oven anyway don't have to worry about saving the canisterTeach Ag Mech - Mike At Home:Lincoln Electric AC225Miller Challenger 172Gas AxeWork:eclectic bunch of 90's vintage blue boxes

Reply:Sorry for your injury.  FYI:  From an auction win a few months ago, I have shipped several 50 lbs cans of Lincoln 5p (6010) loose (so they can fit in a flat rate box).  I use a slicer on a 4.5" angle grinder, can on end so rod type is seen, clears the rod's attachment ends and no issues.  Based on buyer requests for unopened cans, I have (over the past 6 weeks) shipped about 20 cans of rods in the can versus loose,  until the USPS shut me down because of some stupid rule that a flat rate box couldn't be distorted.  Can you believe that you can't legally ship an inflated football in a flat rate "board game" box because it distorts the designed shape?  This stupid interpretation caused a box to be returned to me from a local postmaster in CT at same time an identical box was being delivered in Maine.  USPS  service/help desk (national) said the guy in CT was the only person in the system who understood the rules!!!!  They aren't published  for you and me.  The return did not cost me a cent beyond my original postage because it was "priority mail".  They spent all that money to return a 55 lbs box rather than deliver it from the local PO that rejected it.  BIG GOVERNMENT!!!!!But I digress, end of rant.  Use a slicer just below the top edge and avoid all future problems.Last edited by storeman; 09-12-2014 at 10:37 PM.Reason: clarity30+ yrs Army Infantry & Field Artillery, 25 yrs agoMiller 350LX Tig Runner TA 210, spool gunLincoln 250/250 IdealArcESAB PCM 500i PlasmaKazoo 30"  vert BSKazoo 9x16 horiz BSClausing 12x24 lathe20T Air Press

Reply:I'll bet it would be hard to keep the flux on a rod  let alone fine them all if you used BLACK POWDER and cannon fuse  to open a can
