Can someone give me some suggesttions I want to get a good one that does not have limitations on a poor mans budget. Can anyone give me an estimat of what wall thickness you could do in these (what range of thicknesss?)Looks like this first one would be less expensive as you have to have the dies for this second set uphttp://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...t_6970_628_628http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...70_48683_48683
Reply:You are aware that the price on this thing is over $1600.00? The $170 is for dies only. Since you said "poor man's budget" (which I can relate to!!) I wondered if you saw that. I was ready to order one myself!!------john
Reply:go to PRO-TOOLS.com thay have palns free for a tube/pipe benderim building this one from http://gottrikes.com/but unless you can get the parts and steel for free it still quit a bit of$ChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:I figured the price of the bigger bender was high but I could not find the press on their web.But its my 30th aniversary in a week and my wife is paying LOL.But I will not let her spend that much if I can make one.I either want to build one or buy one that does not have to many restricions.I can build most anything but it looks like the dies are the problem for tubing. Thanks for the length.I am building a plow for my 4 wheeler now cuz of this.I have to rescue my dog.Can you see the way he is looking at me.My wife jeep wrangler is the only thing that will get down the drive. Both my son and my truck are stuck and she thinks hers in invinsable and is rubbing it in bad. Reply:Do you want a tube bender or a pipe bender or one that is capable of bending both?Tube is measured on the O.D. and Pipe is measured on the I.D.I use a JD2 Model 3. I have a manual and a hydraulic version. They offer dies for Round tube, Pipe, and sqaure tube.Check out trick-tools.com and take a look at all of the benders they offer. They have almost every brand and style so you can get an idea of what is out there.- Paulhttp://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:Perhaps I do not know what I want.LOL I just want something to bend something thick enough to weld.Front grille guards etc.I can expain where I am at better so you can see where I am coming from.I just got my tortch set up and I am heating flatbar at angles and I have did some round bending.I am doing things the old fashioned way by welding stubs to a bar or table. Now I want to go on from here as I am limited to what I can bend.Is the 1st pict.I posted of the hyd cyl and fixture capable of bending getting me started? Are there dies that are for either tubing or pipe?I just wondered what I can do with the first picture as the price fits my budjet.I am limited to what I can do I am retired with a siezure like dissabilaty with some bizarre side affects so I just do a few weld craft projects for myself.I have no need or interest in doing any work for others.I stress out to easy and forget what I am doing.I know it sounds like I should not even be around metal fab.LOL and its partially true as my condition is degrading.I worked successfully for 30 yrs in metal fab but I fall down so my company worked with me to retire as they would be responsable if I got hurt in a work area they put me in.I used to know better to do things with gloves and safety glasses.I took a spark to the eye this week that made the right half of my eye bloodshot.I also had been heating the flatbar to bend around a 3 inch pipe.I finished and had to remove the pipe so I graabbed it and burnt the palm of my hand bad enought to scream some filthy words. Now that I have told you whats up I am afraid no one will give me any imfo. But sitting in front of the TV stinks I am going to do something with my life now that I am retired.I am not a danger to anyone else just myself.lol.The only thing I do not want to do is spew my personal problems. But you see I used to be the one others came too to ask questions of(Lead Man/ Supervisor/ Plant Manager/. All in weld Fab) but now I need help from others as I have lost much of my memory and I want it back.If it sounds strange I am setting up a weld shop of my own it cuz I always had acsess to a welder both at work and my families weld fab business that has been running for 46 years. It is not because of my dissabilaty they will not let me do things on the family shop.I chose to stay away from the shop as my brother is a moron. He is dumb by intellagense and actions.I just look dumb to others due to my health issues.Even though I dislike my brother bad enough I have not spoke to him in 5 years I am proud he has kept the family business going as My father passed away in 83.Its really odd to see him run the shop as dad hated it when he came near the shop as a teenager.Dad had a bucket off a bobcat he had welded up for someone.Little sister I mean brother jumped in the truck and went around a corner the bucket that belonged to a customer flew out and he came all the way home not knowing it.Lucky for dad he put an add in the paper and someone brought it back to him.Dad had specific places he kept his tools in several differant bays.Little brother thought he was going to score some points with dad so he took all tools from all 3 areas and organized them into one area.He got booted out of the shop and dad had a few strong words for him.Sorry for such a long post with off topic things but I can not drive do to the problems so this thing is my outlet.Last edited by welditnow; 03-03-2007 at 01:08 PM.Reason: add more
Reply:Wow, welditnow, lots going on there.Let me relate my positive experience with the 12 ton pipe bender from HF. They also have a 16 ton model that looks identical to the Northern Tool unit you linked to, but with a different paint color.I needed a bender for an installation of a hundred feet of fairly large EMT - 1-1/2", I think - with a number of 90 degree bends and small offsets to pass around obstacles. The HF pipe bender comes with pipe sized dies which obvioulsy do not fit EMT. I proved to myself that I could not sneak by using the provided dies alone by crimping a couple of tubes into scrap. The problem is only that the tube walls are not supported by the standard dies to prevent the onset of crimping. So I provided support.I took a length of tube - I forget right now whether it was plastic pipe or EMT - about the length of the die arch, cut it in half lengthwise, and cut it transversely in many places from the open cut side down to leave only a "backbone" about 3/4" wide holding the segmented half-tube together. It could now fill the gap between the O.D. of the tube to be bent and the walls of the oversize die, providing support to prevent the wall of the tube from squishing out and crimping. The backbone of the segmented tube was flexible enough to conform to the curvature of the die. The segments between transverse cuts were, perhaps, 1 to 1-1/2 inches. To be quite modest, it worked perfectly and I finished the EMT installation without outside assistance. The main disadvantage is that it was a PITA to juggle things into position and crank up the jack before things fell out of position, but if I was doing it on a regular basis I would just tape or glue with silicone seal the filler into place in the die. It is definitely not an efficient production tool, but it got the job done with no compromise in the quality of results. I recommend it for economy tube bending.Oh, yeah. I also used short sections of straight tube slit lengthwise into halves to spread the contact pressure of the restraining spools on the frame over a longer section of the tube because I was getting indentations in the tube wall at the spools. That's why it was hard to juggle all the little bits into position and keep them there until pressure could be applied.Have fun.awright

Reply:I bought the JD2 Model 4 and some TUBING dies. But I needed to bend some 6061 T6 Aluminum pipe and it worked out pretty well. I called them before I tried it and they yelled at me NO IT CAN NOT BE DONE. So the challenge was on. It galled a little but nothing unacceptable. I would buy pipe dies if I were to do a lot of it.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:Here is where some of my money went today that I intended to use for things for my weld area. This is the ditch on my own property.Look on near right side where you see the rear tire track angle change. The trucks back passenger tire was the only thing sticking slightly into edge of road.I took pictures ofthe fresh footprints to where I walked back to my garage to get a towstrap and call for a friend to come pull it out. When we went back to get the truck out it was gone.Jerk cop had it towed right off my property clear to town and never even came up to house to talk to me.It cost me $217 to get the truck out of impound. It was out their less than 15 minutes but I could not see because of trees in background. He ran the liscense plate so he new the truck belonged to this adddress and never even contacted me until it was behind bars. Reply:I have this bender http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=32888 and am very pleased with it. The dies are labeled for pipe dimensions so you'll have to allow for the size of tubing that will fit them.I'd think you would do fine with 1/8 thick material, perhaps more. Since I've only bent aluminum tube with up to 3/16" walls I cannot attest to steel but wouldn't hesitate myself.Besides, compared to the cost of better benders this thing is worth it if only for the dies.Regards,Clay
Reply:Thanks Clay that is the one I am going to get. They are cheap on shipping. Thanks much for bringing me to a decision.I will have one in the shop soon. You guys have no idea how your helping me is appreciated.BUYITNOW:
Reply:Welditnow,I haven't used one of these benders, but I frequent some of the racing forums. I've been told that one way of keeping the tubing from kinking in these benders is to pack them full of dry sand, then tack weld a plug on the ends so the sand can't run out. The sand inside keeps the tubing from flattening when you make the bend. When the drops the stops!Check out my website at: Tombstone 180 ACHandler 120Millermatic 210Powermax 380Harris & Victor torchesSawzallChop Saw
Reply:Sounds like a good tip to save from kinking. But it also sounds like an awfull lot of packing sand into a small size tube or a tube that is long. But if it works its worth the effort to have it turn out nice. |
