Was thinking last night (often dangerous), about how in the world do they cut "blocked" steel? Im trying to describe big square steel blocks that are sometimes 12"x12" solid steel. Reply:There are a variety of ways. For steel it is common to use large band saws. We had several ship propeller shaft sections behind our shop that were around 18 inches diameter and we recently worked on a steel section 23 inches in diameter. It was saw cut. Many years ago I saw a circular saw blade over three feet in dameter with carbide teeth. b the work was held in a huge vise as the blade travelled through the work. It was used for sawing alloy sections at Boeing. Steel plate can be cut using oxy-fuel torches.
Reply:A Waterjet machine will cut anything.No matter how thick..If it will fit on the table.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Steel that thick is also cut with oxyfuel (O/A, O/Propane, etc)Many materials that thick are cut with burning bars, though the finish will NEVER be mistaken for machined in this case
Reply:Hey DLS,Been welding & cutting metal for 41+ years and last year ago I had the opportunity to visit a facility that cut steel 48" square and each piece was 60' long. It was loaded from a train to a roller line, and then into the cut shop. This piece was then hydraulically fed into a unit at a precise length, and a CNC laser cut thru it in less than 2 minutes and the cut edge looked like what a 40A plasma cutter would cut a piece of 24ga sheetmetal. Awesome to say the least, and the shop foreman said that particular unit had the power to cut thru 60". It shows the technological advances that are being improved on each day and only get better.....DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab.
