I wish steel suppliers would put there prices online. It would make doing quotes a whole lot easier! I don't think anyone in the DFW area does. What a pain.

Reply:I can get prices and even order online from Ryerson Steel which is local to me. I've never ordered from it but I use it all the time to get a ballpark price.
Reply:Metalsdepot.com  they will show you prices.  It's a good general starting point for when I have to price out material I'm not familiar with.
Reply:Problem is steel prices change frequently. Every other time I go to my steel supplier the prices have changed slightly.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:I was having a similar issue.  I'm brand new to welding and I didn't know what shapes or sizes are even produced.  I went to 3 metal shops in Austin.  First wouldn't take the time of day, had no listing of what they carried or pricesheet.  Second was super helpful, showed me to the scrap bin, talked about the basics of what they carried for a couple minutes, but no listing of the products they carried or prices.  Everything is individual quote.  Third place immediately printed a report of his inventory with prices for everything.  It's been a huge educational piece, because when you don't know what's available, it's a little difficult to figure out what you want to use to build a particular project.  Only downside is the third metal shop is focused on metal buildings as opposed to general metal supply, so the selection seems limited compared to the others.  But they built loyalty with me in helping a newb out.

Reply:I just went today and picked up some aluminum plate.  Essentially just picked thru offcut pieces.  Payed $3 per pound.  Steel was about $1.50 or so if I remember correctly.  Picked up some expanded metal that were offcuts as well.
Reply:I ended up ordering some steel from www.allmetalsinc.com, everything looked good , was at the door in 2 days , there price on what I ordered (2x4) sheet of diamond plate was actually cheaper shipped than metaldepots price before shipping
Reply:There's only one place here out of a dozen that will have even a price list to look at and they will copy it for you if asked.  They also coincidentally happen to have the best prices!  Unfortunately they only stock square tubing but it's most sizes and gauges.Everywhere else, I call them up and go through the list of material and often will add a few things just for fun or curiosity.  it takes way too long but there's no alternative.  You'd think if they update the price on their computers and databases it would be easy to do it online.  So that's no excuse.  They all hope you'll just pass on the cost and not care.  I practically got told by the closest supplier to me that they don't want my business when I told them their competitors prices.  Prices here aren't so bad but there seems to be as many steel suppliers as zip codes where I am.  There are half a dozen within a fifteen minute drive from my house.  There's no rhyme or reason to their prices, at some tubing is cheaper, others for plate.  Even one has their 10' cut lengths cheaper per foot than their 20' and 24' sticks. While material prices can be volatile, steel and other metals haven't changed too much in the past year.  One thing that I knew would happen, is even though the cost of raw materials has gone down and the scrap yards are paying pennies per pound again.  The cost of new stock hasn't budged.  Most places don't like to cater to the little guys and would rather deal with big accounts.
Reply:Welcome to the wonderful world of tiered pricing  They all do itI get the same treatment, but in my case it's the preferential treatment to some degree, I'm somewhere in the middle tier area.  Same with trailer parts.  Full line retail sucks, but for small buyers it's the rule it seems.  "Nothing personal, just business""Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I know this isn't gonna help any of you guys down in the southern region of the country but if you're up towards north carolina Tri state steel has some good prices on stuff an would probably send you a price list. they have a $150.00 minimum before they will deliver, which shouldn't be to big of a deal for some of you guys.93 Bobcat 225GMillerMatic 135HF Tig 91811
