Of Work! I only worked on the anvil in my spare time. . I used O&A to cut out the middle, and to cut out a point for the horn. . Then used a grinder to do the rest. Sure was a lot of grinding! . . I was going to do some more work to it, But decided this was enough! . . I used 2 grinder wheels and a flap disc #80 to smooth it out.I have an unlimited supply of RR plates and RR rail. . . My dad retired from the RR after 44 years, and I can go to a local RR yard and tell them what I need, and they load it up for me! I used my log-splitter and made the square block to set it on. . . I didn't have an anvil and thought I would make one after seeing some on here! I don't believe I would want to make another one unless I bought more tools! Reply:I'm headed to the hills this weekend. There is a set off tracks near mom and dads place with old rail laying around, problem is the pieces are like 50' long. I might try to find some small pieces but I have to think someone would have picked up those for scrap. Maybe I will call the yard see if they have any. How long is your rail?Dave ReberWadsworth OhioOriginally Posted by yakdungReally nice! I just wish I could figure out where I can purchase a piece of rail in the Houston area.
Reply:Thanks everyone! The RR rail is 16" long. No, ThorsHammer. . . I don't have too much spare time on my hands. . . I would go in my shop to work on other things, and take about 30 minutes of my "spare time' and grind away!Fexal, You make some nice stuff ! . . . I do believe its time for you to "step up to the plate", and start grinding on some RR rail !I found this thread one night while searching here for homemade anvils. . . The thread was started by "Boostinjdm" Not Jim. . . That's the best lookin' homemade anvil I've ever seen! . . He had the right tool for the job!Scroll down to post #11 to see it finished. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=161251Hobart Handler 190Hobart Spool-Gun 100Lincoln 225 ACMiller & Pipeliner HoodDewalt 14" Chopsaw, GrindersHarris O/AVictor TorchCustom Built O/A CartCustom Welding CartHeavy Duty 16 Speed Floor Drill PressPipe-BenderDrill Doctor

Reply:When it comes to playing with rails Bill I kind of feel like a cheater. I worked as a field welder and in a railroad fabrication shop for years when I was younger. You would be amazed how much we would get done with grinders. We had a endless supply of various grinders and abrasive wheels, and because of those days I can wreck any grinder in short order. I won this Victor torch at a welding show a few years back for the quickest cut through a piece of 119lb rail. My friend forced me to do it, and I destroyed the competition and cut it in 34seconds. I actually told my friend that I felt like a bag of sh!t for doing that, it was like taking candy from a baby. I would have rail cars with cranes ride me around for days sometimes just cutting rail. It was a fun job back then but I wasn't making any money there so I moved on.  Attached ImagesI hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:Put a cup stone on your 4 1/2 grinder and you can tear up some steel Bill. Theyre heavy and your grinder will really jump when you turn it on so you gotta hang on to it. Its not really good for the grinder cause it will get hot as a bastard, but you get better control vs. wrestling a giant grinder on a smallish project.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Very nice work. I have a friend who made one very similar and just as pretty. Hes very proud of it, and he should be. After doing a lot of research on Anvils, and being in the car restoration business, I got excited about the idea of the Hardy Hole. Sounds pretty funny, but wow is it ever a good idea. Its a 3/4 square hole in the anvil which acts as a receiver for whatever tools you choose to use with it. So, a circular dome attachment for hammering things rounder shapes, or a fork used for bending rods, etc etc is possible with it. It really opened up possibilities for using the anvil. So, I started searching for an anvil with a Hardy Hole. Good luck with that. Ebay has them but they are antiques and very expensive. So, I broke down and purchased the 55 lb anvil from HF http://www.harborfreight.com/55-lb-r...vil-69161.html for $54 with Hardy Hole. I then stripped all that crappy painfully purple paint off, smoothed it out and used black high grade black urethane paint on the parts that aren't used. GTG. My shop is so small that if it doesn't have added usefulness, its just not there. Not to take away from the RR anvils tho.. super nice job. A person could make money selling those on Ebay.
Reply:That looks amazing, great job.

They didn't even know it was homemade from a piece of RR rail.I told them I made it, and both of them ask me if I would make them one! . . . OH BOY, is what I said! I think I'm going to hide the anvil so no one else can see it from now on!
