Reply:Did you weld any strong backs on the backside of that plate? Sure seems like a lot of leverage could be applied to the plate, as low as the pintle is from the frame. Considering the size of the truck, and the size of trailer it can pull. Reply:ADMS, are you crazy posting a trailer hitch thread, surely you will be sued and loose your first child.LOL. I see a lot lesser hitches on trucks. of course reinforcement would be great but thank god someone still has the odacity and nerve to build a hitch or soon we will be without trailers.   I once told a staff engineer that he had no balls, everytime we needed a design he ran out and got a consultant to do it, all the time beating his chest that he was an engineer and us pee ons don't understand.  I told the big boss right in front of him, what are we paying him for, If he was truly and engineer he would design it , check it, and say build it because it will work.    So many threads here want to scare everyone from builing a trailer or a hitch. I have seen enough of the OP work over the years on the threads here to believe he is competent to build a hitch.   Hitch looks no different than many I have seen in service, including the one on my S1900 international that I did not build but gurantee it has had the shazbot beat out of it and is still there. reinforcement would be additional peace of mind. Nice work so far.     Just like and engineer, we as welders after some experience of course, should have the confidence to say I built it and it will work.        And oh my god you welded it to the last 1/2 inch of the space age steel frame, of course now the axles will fall off and the dump body will surely fail.Rant over. Reply:kolot, you are definitely right! The dump body will fall off to as I see it is welded onto that also!

Reply:I have no problem at all when a qualified welder makes a hitch, or trailer, because we all know a qualified welder would not use a 120-volt Mig machine to do so. I'm sure admswelding is more than qualified to build this hitch, especially after seeing his work over the years. I was questioning the engineering! I must know at least a hundred engineers, (PE) don't remember any of them knowing how to weld though. Reply:To answer everyone yes there are gusstts off the lower frame.3/4"THICK 8"X8" legs. And the they are also angle inward toward the ring 4" in off the sides. The ring can be raised if needed they can drill more holes higher. All was welded with 7018H4R Excalibur licoln rod 1/8".As many have mentioned this is not my first one, it is not coming off that truck.Everything has 2 passes back side got stitch welded in multiple locations.Gussetts got fully weled both sides 2 passes.I have seen these plates done in 5/8".I go heavy!

Reply:Man I hope this is not a mistake, but...........Just out of curiosity, (which killed the cat. But satisfaction, brought him back!) did you disconnect the batteries and/or computer in the truck? I know it's been beaten here, I'm not looking to make this thread about it, just wondering if you did or not? If you want, you can include your thoughts, either way.Nice job! Reply:Actually I USED to worry about welding on the rearmost part of a truck frame, but not anymore. You're only affecting the temper in the region which doesn't flex when welding at the extreme rear of the frame.  It's not like welding in an area that flexes a lot."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Notice the double frame on the truck, it's set up for a real beating, and to resist twist when dumping. But you'll still get some clown who'll either tip it over, or twist the BeJesus outta the frame dumping in a bind.  ROFL"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Sam,  don't you know when you sit in that truck , somewhere in the area of the visor is a label that clearly stated the truck should be taken to the most ungodly uneven hilly terrain and only then is the body to be raised to full height.     I used to love it when I worked in a job shop and they would bring one in, raise it till it looked like a bannana and say " can you fix it" then they would begin to explain how they did it and I would just walk away"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:thankfully the new frame less dump trailers just flop the whole rig over so most dump operators are more conscious of their environments around here.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.Looks good, I am surprised you did not run dual shield on that.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Looks great.  Count me on the stick never dying crew.  I can't think of any process that is as versatile.  I was working on my shop press trying to stop all the hydraulic leaks when two guys pull up and need a repair.  One of them has a zero turn deck that needed a patch welded to where he tore it on a pipe sticking out of the ground, and the second needed a stainless to mild steel repair done on some project he has going.  Pull out the leads flip the switch and weld on with 7014 and the other weld it with 309.  5 electrodes later and $100 richer, I roll up the leads.  All in all I can't see setting up the wire feeder for that.     besides the mower didn't have to be unloaded.  I have 100' on both leads and just pulled them out to his unit.
Reply:You dont impress me and never show your welds even tho you get some fun jobs. Try using a 16 megapixel camera and close up on your welds with no paint and then show Me. Thank you.Last edited by Insaneride; 03-20-2013 at 11:14 PM.Reason: Now were even

Reply:I "stick" lots of stuff for the same reasons, 100 foot leads and not tenting.Best one was the brand new MACK, the box went up, gate didn't open, bolts holding the mast to the bed sheared when he "jerked out" from under his load, box partailly unloaded when the top of the box hit the ground!
Reply:Originally Posted by InsanerideI would be lying if I said it didnt look good on your big truck. You got guts showing anything trailer related on this siteBTW, I am taking welding lessons. I get em from this site.
Reply:Originally Posted by Stick-manActually, the full frames usually take the truck with. There are always exceptions to the norm, but a frameless and a quarter frame (semi frameless), usually just snap the draft arms and cylinder mount, and leave the truck upright. At least that is what i've noticed over my career. And you'll never fix stupid. Many times, I've dropped my box and drove like hell to pull away from some moron that doesn't know level! I was always the guy to drive to the farthest end of the dump, to be all by myself.
Reply:I guess those certs mean you can stand on your head while using the heel of your boot to weld. Im impressed now.
