So, my preferred method of practice is to just try and make something. I think then I get practice cutting, laying out, fitting, and welding. So I came up with this after many hours. The welds aren't where I want them to be at, so no up close pictures. Some came out good, others not good. Problem I had was burning through the metal. It appeared 16 gauge, but I really had to tweak my settings to get it right. Now I ground off some outer welds and it left a shiny spot on the joint of course. Are there any suggestions you guys have to restore the ground down location to the same color as the rest of the metal? I took a cup brush to it, didn't work as I had hoped.
Reply:Looks good. I would radius the corners of the top, especially if you've got little ones around.
Reply:Judging by the background I would say little ones frequent the house.+1 on the radious!
Reply:Yep, thats gonna lay open a toddlers forehead. Good lookin table anywaySafety 3rdGump
Reply:Nice looking table. Back in the early 1960s, my Dad discovered Formica and built end tables and a coffee table for the living room. They were made with the top edges beveled back about 30 degrees, which made for a nice pointed corner. Needless to say, while chasing my brother, I tripped and connected my forehead with the corner of the coffee table. 6 stitches that day and I can still feel the bump almost 50 years later.JackJackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180
Reply:Thanks for the compliments. The corners do have a small radius, but youre right, more wouldn't hurt. Any idea on blending the ground spots?

Reply:So I built a twin for this table, and put the pair for sale on ksl.com (essentially Craig's list). Anyway I sold the pair at just barely over my cost for materials. $20I wasn't super confident about them and didn't want to charge a premium price. But I am pretty happy to have created something that someone wanted to buy. Thanks to all the guys who helped me! This money will go to more materials for more hood time! |
