was given a Carolina band saw, has bad worm gear in tranny box. I know some guys hate these things but a free saw is hard to beat. Problem is I can't find parts and a new box runs more than it is worth. Anybody have any improvised solutions?
Reply:You might be able to get a machine shop to make you a new gear.. Reply:Ideas:a) check Boston gear catalog (it is online) for a match or for something to modify to make it workb) Have one made.c) find another machine with a different problem to lift parts fromd) reengineer the drive to get around the problem
Reply:I think www.mcmaster.com has worm gears. You could look for a gear box or complete gear motor on ebay.Would a junk rototiller gear box have about the right ratio? Reply:Gear ratio is 50:1 output is 35 rpm from input of 1725-1750 rpm and shafts are 5/8 in 7/8 out making it pretty particular. May have to reengineer if a substitute can't be had. its 51 T as well.
Reply:Carolina Industrial Equipment is now the parent company, anyway was able to obain new box, $230 , installed , minor adjustments and now seems to work quite well. Not the best but worth the 23o all day. |
