I am looking to build a simple tube bender to create a series of arches out of 1" and 1 1/4" square tube. I am going to fashion it after similar "ring" type rollers that I've seen. What are the roller dies actually called that are used in these types of machines and where can you buy them seperately? Reply:I can't vouch for either of these companies, but I believe they sell the dies you are looking for:http://www.pro-tools.com/http://www.toolsplus1.com/eztube.htmI started buying stock for building my own bender, but never got around to it.
Reply:I've purchased dies from   Shopoutfitters.com   and have been very satisfied with them. The ones I got are for round tube and are the 360 degree type, not the 90 or 180 degree ones many suppliers have.
Reply:Depending on the how tight your arch is, you may not need a specific die. You can roll them on a flat die or the shaft.   A way to guide it would be real nice, but not mandatory. I've seen guides created by rolling 1/4" round bar around a flat die.  You can try it when you build your roller. If you roll lots of arches then you might want to check into having them fabricated locally, if you cannot do it yourself.  I would think you would save some money.  I fabbed mine.
Reply:one other thing about square tubing dies,  Rather than buying a separate die for each size look for an adjustable die.  I am working on a roller for this right now, and have been copying a roller die design I saw in a friends shop.   Mine,  will fit 2"sq tube all the way to 1" by using a set of spacers that bolt in place.  I think the one I patterned mine after is sold by ercolina.  Do a search for ring rollers or angle rolls, and most manufacturers sells the dies. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Thanks for the info, I think Tap got what I was after the best, I should have been more clear . I guess The flat round type die is what I'm after, like what's in a ring roller. Also the drive roller that would roll the stock. Would larger diameter hardened drill rod work? Maybe using some stop collets as guides??KevMiller 210 and 140 MigsBernard Q-Torches on bothMiller Syncrowave 200Spoolmate 3035 for sale, excellent condtion- PM for detailsThermal Dynamics 38XLShop OutFitters 20/20 Bending SystemLots of other cheap and not so cheap tools Still have LOTS to learn, but got some nice stuff to learn on!
Reply:I think I know what you are looking for. I have a metal lathe so I just turned two dies from 3"hrs. My ring roller maxed out at 3/4" thick material so 1" hss wouldn't fit in to start the rolling process. Thus I had to machine the 1" wide groove into the rollers (so flat rolls wouldn't help). In hindsight, I could have made a smaller diameter drive roller, but I liked the idea of having the grooves to guide the stock through. Worked like a charm.  I'll try and attatch some pics, sometimes it works, sometimes no (old iMac gives me grief). Attached ImagesMan invented metal, he can do whatever he wants with it.KMAC
Reply:KMAC- YES.. Thats exactly what I'm after. I know others have talked about and used the plywood jig method, but I need to be able to have several different arch radius, and this is much more practical. I have a similar ring roller that makes out at about 3/4" as well. I don't have access to a lathe, thats why I was thinking on using some clamp collars like these http://www.whittet-higgins.com/part.php?series_id=71 to create an adjustable shoulder. I would still have to create some type of drive roller unless I wanted to utilize my existing ring roller and creat the dies to fit it instead.KevMiller 210 and 140 MigsBernard Q-Torches on bothMiller Syncrowave 200Spoolmate 3035 for sale, excellent condtion- PM for detailsThermal Dynamics 38XLShop OutFitters 20/20 Bending SystemLots of other cheap and not so cheap tools Still have LOTS to learn, but got some nice stuff to learn on!
Reply:I made the dies for this roller for a buddy on the ornamentiron yahoo group.
