I had to replace the radius rod mount on my daughters 93F150.  I have done quite a few of these.  I burned off 3 hot rivets and one bolt with 1/8" arc air, 80 psi, 180 amps. The bolt was in the far right hole. The rivets knocked right out.  I never touched the frame.I did the left rear spring hanger on MY truck the next day, same way.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I tried getting the hot rivets out of my Chevy frame but they wouldn't torch out. I had to use an air chisel to knock the heads off (both sides) and then put a punch tip on the air chisel and knock the center section out. Looks like you got an easy set. Nice job. I wonder if I would have had better luck with the plasma.....but I didn't have it at the time.So let's see pics of the finished replacement? New part or did you repair the old bracket?Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:I have replaced a lot of spring hangers and the same part as above.  I repaired one radius rod bracket Its a pain in the butt.  New one $45.00.  Truck is gone I did this job a few weeks ago.  All I have are the scraps.    I bolt them back in with 7/16 fine thread grade 5 and flat washers.  In the last 2 years I have been through a box of 50 bolts.I used to cut them off with a torch, but I could only cut the heads off, so they were still stuck in the frame and I had to drive them out with an air hammer.  Now I burn the rivet as deep as I can with the arc air.As far as the plasma, I have one and a gouging tip.  I still have more control with the carbon rod.DavidLast edited by David R; 05-06-2008 at 12:45 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:this may sound like a dumb question, but what is an arc air? it sounds to me like a primitive plasma torch (melt the metal using electricity, then blow it out with air).Later,Andy

Reply:It is such a simple process I guess you could call it primitive. It makes a lot of jobs really easy and with a little practice you can do nice work with it.
Reply:wait a minute....Am I confused? We had copper coated carbon rods that were placed into a rod holder that had an air hose hooked up to it. When you would strike an arc the air would blow the molten metal forward and away from the user. This process was taught to me in college as arc gouging. Huge 600amp power supply. But the Arcair unit states that it can cut through metallic and non metallic materials. How would you strike an arc on something non metallic, melt it and blow it away? This was on the website as an Arcair Slice system. And if you did those rivets with what I used in college, you are WAY skilled in using that tool!!!!!Help me out here.Either way, that project of removing rivets is a dirty job. I hate doing it. For some reason I end up doing it often. Not on the same rivets, not on the same truck.....Last edited by Joker11; 05-06-2008 at 07:02 PM.Reason: I am a retardLincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:Yeah, its a gouge.  Copper coated carbon rods.  To gouge you don't need a thousand amps, I did this with 180.  It depends on what you are doing.  I burned the galvanize off a cell tower with an arc air because I couldn't get to it with a grinder.  Just took off the outer layer where I had to weld. Its a handy inexpensive tool.  Cuts off "irregular" (bird crap) welds far better than a torch.Did it say "ferrous and non ferrous" or Metallic and non metallic"  It will cut aluminum and brass.DavidHere is the whole book written by the place that invented it.http://www.thermadyne.com/arcair_pdfs/89_250_008.pdfLast edited by David R; 05-06-2008 at 07:27 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I had to go look up the arcair slice system and found it uses oxygen. I still don't see how you can cut something that doesn't conduct electricity like concrete that it mentioned. I'm curious so I am going to dig a little deeper.
Reply:Oldtimer, I have a slice torch, but I never tired concrete. For the Arc Air, before I had the proper carbon holder, I put the carbon in an electrode holder and used a blow gun in my other hand. For the slice rods, I  just hook a hose to my cutting torch and use a battery  with jumper cables to get it started.  I just bought a used slice torch handle last week.  I still need the 3/8" front end parts.  ONLY $119.00 for a collet and holder. In college, my instructor said we could make a slice electrode by stuffing steel wool in  a brake line.  Never tried it.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I just looked it up and figured out it is a different breed of cat than the old arc air cutter. When you retire you miss out on this new stuff. Wonder how long this has been out? Probably for years as far behind as I am.
Reply:Cut and pasted from their site:Unlike any other cutting process used today, the Arcair® SLICE systems can cut, burn or pierce virtually any metallic, non-metallic or composite material.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:Exothermic cutting is nice for burning out stuck pins like this:Attachment 19464And these:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...&highlight=pinDavid R, Thanks for the pics!I think the only thing "Twin-I-Beam" was good for, was interesting TV commercials, of Ford trucks being beat on! Reply:Twin I beam is good for wearing out tires more quickly than normal.
Reply:I always thought the twin I beam was a bad design. But everyone said it was because I am a chevy man. Reply:got twin i beam in my truck it blows
Reply:Arcair makes several systems. One is for gouging metallic materials. They also make a slicing torch made more for rescue and demolition. It is a straw of magnesium I believe that you Start it with a spark and then feed it oxygen. At that point it will cut through just about anything including concrete. But it is not pretty. Purely functional for demolition.
Reply:Ther I go again.... Man I gotta check the dates on these posts. This ones only five years old.
Reply:The desert race guys like TIB suspension because it's possible to get gobs of suspension travel for a relatively cheap price.
Reply:The slice are sweet for burning out large pins and demolition.  I have seen them demonstrated on a cinder block and although they claim to burn through anything your only burning through things that react with oxygen in an efficient manner, if you have to get through concrete, a breaker, or diamond saw or explosive charges would be better choices lol.   here is a photo of me running a slice removing about 2" or 3" pins, if you try to do this with a cutting torch you can end up melting the cutting tip to a blob from all the back blow heat. Attached Images
Reply:maybe the one I saw wasn't a slice.   It was a long tube, all you needed was a car battery to start ignition and then oxygen burnt the end of the tubular rod, not the material you were cutting. It had such a high heat at the buisness end,it woul burn through anything, including concrete.  For concrete it would heat, explode, and spall the concrete out of the way.  It would not be  tool of choice for most fabrication, mostly used fo heavy demolision or rescue.
Reply:I saw a guy in college use the carbon rod style arc gouging. He pointed the rod in such a manner that ALL of the molten metal came right at his face and chest. It burned right through his shirt and just spattered his chest with molten berries. His hood saved his face. Man, what a retard.
