I'm currently training up on TIg and am getting to grips with welding.I'm doing this weld in 2G position.I have about a 38degree bevel on each plate, I put in a root at 80 amps. a quick hot run weave at 120, a filling weave at 120.It works fine up to this point, i get the the fill flat or slightly convex, but i still need to do a capping run. My issue is too much weld metal giving in to gravity, like a saggy boob when cross sectioned.I dont have any pictures and my trainer is on holiday atm.I've tried different torch angles with the tungsteN facing upwards and using between 120 and 160 amps, but i still get the saggy boob effect, I know i could probably do it with a split cap, 2 runs blended. but is there a technique to get an even convex cap with one run about 3 cm wide?Thankyou for any links or advice, i am not sure if i have explained this perfectlyRegardsDave
Reply:3 cm on horizontal??? Gonna be tough, about the only slim chance you'll have is to weave on a 45, keep your weave "level with the world" as they say. Nobody weaves that wide on horizontal in the real world, you need to run stringers, save the weaves for 5G.what is the 8 mm in the thread title referencing, plate thickness?Last edited by TimmyTIG; 12-17-2012 at 02:44 PM.
Reply:yes 8 mm thicknessyour probably right, i was advised to do multi runs as it doesnt effect material property as much as one one big weave. I'll have another go on wednesday
Reply:when you say 45 do you mean a 45 degree bevel? on each plate, and what does level with the world mean?I'm new to this welders talk
Reply:well, I'm not all that sharp on the metrics, but I'm thinking 3 cm is a little over an inch, am I right on that? 2.5 cm = 1 inch...I'm sorry, 'level with the world' would only apply on a 6G, where you would weave horizontally across the bevel while the pipe is on a 45 degree angle. You can do it, but it's pretty hard and not too common. You could try weaving on a 45 degree angle instead of straight up and down, that keeps you metal from drooping down somewhat, but in order to get all the way across both bevels your weave is gonna be way wide run stringers
