Reply:Am curious. Please school me on this. We don't use the term 'combo welders' around here. What does it mean? that a welder can handle multiple procedures (tig, stick, mig, ms, ss) or that he does his own fitting and welding? Who does the heavy rigging?
Reply:In the lower 48 a combo welder is typically someone capable of TIG and Stick welding pressure pipe. Fitting pipe may or may not be a part of the job as well; it changes from job to job. Larger projects typically have dedicated fitters, riggers, and millwrights. Small jobs the welder often wears a lot of different hats. Originally Posted by OldSparksAm curious. Reply:Thanks A DAB....normal call out here would be either pressure stick welder or tig welder with the expectation that the latter would be qualified to fill/cap with stick if need be.
Reply:As I have mentioned in previous posts, combo welders are in great demand down here on the Gulf Coast.Go South!
Reply:Wonder why they're having trouble manning that job? Been seeing them advertise for at least 6 months.

Reply:This morning I saw a neighbor who works for Fluor. He said they are super busy, but that they're always looking for weldors.

Reply:$40 an hour should bring them in. That's where it's headed anyway. Shutdown season just started. I recently saw a job advertised in Alabama for just that amount.
