Goodafternoon, everyone!!Last summer I managed to break my trusty Craftsman bench vise... I took it back to sears, they informed me that their vises don't carry the lifetime warranty, so I was on my own.I looked around online... I didnt want a cheaply made vise, been there done that... I found a few good ones that I really liked, but they were all in the $700+ range, WAY out of my price range...But I knew I could work something out... Craigslist was a disappointment (WELL used, beat up, and 3/4 the price of new), so that fell through as well...And after a little time spent online, I thought to myself "Why not just make one? I mean, there isnt much to a vise, is there?"I took the ole' craftsman apart piece by piece and sure enough, nope, this isnt too complicated. Granted I *have* screwed up simpler things (I once literally broke a hammar) I felt like this was a project that was well within my abilities...So, I drove out to the city and bought some steel, ranging in thickness from 1/4" to 3/4", a ratchet and nice Kobalt socket, a couple feet of threaded rod, and some various random hardware.I came home, and promptly put the project on the backburner...And there it sat until a couple weeks ago. Something came up and I set it aside, and then I just... Well, never got back to it. I welded up a nice Chas Parker vise that I bought for next to nothing last fall, and I'd just been using that in the mean time...But I already had everything, so I wrapped the whole project up in a weekend.Long story short, I'm VERY happy with how this project came out:I made a BIG vise, 8" jaws and probably 50-60 pounds of steel... I got to use my new MIG welder, and have something else for the shop that I'd wanted for a long time... And people on YouTube really seem to be enjoying the build videos as well...Anyway, just thought I'd share my latest project with yall, hope you like it... Have an awesome weekend, everyone Last edited by Lanse; 04-06-2013 at 01:36 PM.[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:Came out great. The color with the clear coat made it look really nice. You should put a handle on it, similar to the drill press with 3 rods for a different look.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Looks good. I like the design. Nice and simple. I might build one for my self.Put a washer and a nut on the back end and cross drill it for a pin... that way the vise will open on it's own. Fight the urge to weld it... unless you never want to remove the threaded rod again. Ready rod isn't ideal but it should work ok. Acme rod is better and you can order it from places like McMaster... or salvage one from an old trailer jack like I did here: http://weldingweb.com/showpost.php?p...1&postcount=54

Reply:Awesome work!  I really want to build one now!About the socket...I would drill a hole through the wall of the socket and into the nut.  Either thread the nut and use a set screw...or (what I would do), is to drill all the way through and use a cotter pin.Miller Syncrowave 200MillerMatic 180 AutoSetHobart Airforce 500iVictor O/A (80cf)

Reply:Wonder if the smooth face of the jaws will effect the grip, another function of a vise is the anvil side of it. I like the build, thought about doing one and would be a cool thing for the bench.Magazines have issues, everything else has problems
Reply:Very cool Lanse! Needs a better set up for the handle I think, but if you had a LATHE wink wink i'm sure you would be thinking outside the box on that issue. Great job as always bud! I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:just wondering what size threaded rod did you use ?  how many threads per inch was it ?
Reply:Awesome vise Lanse and very entertaining presentation as usual.  You should have your own cable TV show.BTW....you didn't eat the lamb did you...although I probably would .Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor

Reply:Nice work Lanse. I have to ask, why didnt you use an ACME thread since you already broke one vise? I think I saw you use an ACME thread before in a video using  a drill to drive an OA torch?
Reply:True, but I've never stripped one out!!Haha, no, thats not my video. Wish it was my idea, who [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009

Reply:Hey Lanse... have you tested your vise? How about the tomato paste test? Skip to around 2:17. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PH8L-dIrxc[/ame]
Reply:Nice work!If you want a really tough vice, keep an eye out for the old "post vises" blacksmiths use. They are made out of forged steel instead of cast iron. They tend to have long handles and can get torqued down to amazing amounts of force. Very rigid too as they have a post that goes to the ground.Lincoln Idealarc 250Lincoln Weldanpower CC/CV engine driveLincoln LN-25 wire feederMiller Syncrowave 180 SDVarious oxy-fuel setups featuring Victor, Harris, and Prest-o-lite products
